Im on job #1 since fellowsihp about 4 years. I had an experience where was offered the job of a salary in the 400's for a big company (not kaiser), however I was emailed by the recruititer after the interview, that hey sorry the job said your pay for 400k that was for anesthesia pain. For pm&r pain your salary is about 90% of that salary (was 40k drop).

I have had a good experience with this job in terms of good support cordial environment and nice referral base, but thinking about taking another job that pays close to 500K (this is another big company who doesnt make a distinction between Anes vs PMR. I am curious if other docs with a big more experience see a big pay diffference in these big companies, or if that is common. Im sure most small PP dont do that but maybe just some big companies. Seems like big companies try and pay you what you take but not neccessrialy whaet you are worth becaue my CPT code pays just as much as my 2 other colleagues who are anesthesia trained

The way TPMG does it (Kaiser could be a lot of different employers) is by surveying what docs in your specialty earn in the community. Anesthesiologists get paid more in the community than PMR, so that is the pay you start at. You get raises at future time intervals, raises for job performance for good patient satisfaction scores. But what is interesting is that a new guy sometimes makes more money than an old guy because the old guy starting salary was way lower. Given the current huge inflation over the last 4 years it would not surprise me if someone starting now made as much as someone starting 4 years ago. All depends on the survey. Not sure how they work fellowships into the mix but probably the same. BTW I loved working for TPMG best employment decision I ever made.

It's common for big institutions to do things that way, where general salary tables are decided in boardrooms.

It has more to do with supply/demand. Anesthesiologists command more in their primary specialty so the bureaucrats try to account for that.

10% paycut for 10% lower MCAT score
Lol didnt know that MCAT score would follow me so long in all honestly i cant even remember what mine was anymore.

On a side note we got a resume from somebody who put their MCAT score and Step 1 score on their resume. I thought that was cute.I was thinking I should update my CV and put some merit badges from boyscouts that I earned. You think that would give me a nice bump in pay by your logic?

haha In all honesty though I do remember when I matched PM&R. Anes was not really all that competitive (probably still more then PM&R), but I cant be mad when other people make money.

I just think it's weird to have your salary change not based on your job description, but based on your residency. Again my CPT code for an epidural or SCS trial code re imburses the same as my anes colelagues in my practice. I also matched into the same fellowship that anesthesia docs had the opprutunity to match into (when pain used to be semi competitive).

our group is a mix of anesthesiologists and physiatrists but we all did ACGME pain fellowships so we are all under “anesthesia - pain” and have the same contract.

May be dependent on region as well. When I interviewed with Kaiser in SoCal, they actually pay PM&R pain more than Anesthesia pain. Intro pain for PM&R year 1 was $363,600 plus 75k sign on, whereas anesthesia pain was $360,000 plus sign on. That being said, gen PM&R at kaiser only paid $253,200...

thanks for the info does this progressively increase? Were I am at there are no raises...there is a compensation comitee who will give you a raise if the market commands it...whatever that means

i don’t think there should be any difference if similar work is provided based on similar credentials

Yes if you interview, they will walk you through their progressive increase package. This is specific to Kaiser SoCal
