Now that I have your attention

Guys and Gals, I have some questions, and despite about 450 views of my two previous attempts, no one except Skrubz has been willing to help.

Are any of you wise and scholarly Anesthesiologists willing to help out a lowly pre-med who has a great interest in your field?

I would suggest not worring or thinking about what you want to do with your life until you get to medical school and see what's out there. Going into school I had an idealistic vision of what I wanted to do but since I have changed my mind a dozen of times. If you polled medical students, probably 95% have changed there mind more than once about their specialty.

If you want so general information about the specialty, search the old posts, it's all there. As well, you can use you favorite search engine and look for info on anesthesiology.

I'm just trying to get as much information about each speciality I'm interested in, not trying to make my mind up. I guess I take the "Be Prepared" to heart.

I had some specific questions, just trying to get a feel for what it might be like to work in each field. I'm definetely not going to pronounce "I'm going to be a ...." at this point, but there are so many choices, i'd like to go into it with a general idea what is appealing, and what isn't.

I checked the old posts, but didn't really find what I was looking for.

I guess next stop is the hospital to ask!

Remember the immortal words of Sun Tzu (my favorite quote)

"Every battle is won or lost before it is ever fought"

dude, I asked a number of specific questions as a first year medical student and didn't get jack for answers. If you can get answers as a pre-med, then more power to you.
Here's the threat: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81753

Seriously, hit the pre-allo forum, as that's where the cool people hang (and it's where you'll probably get the best reception).

Probably a good call, just surprised that no one answered either of our questions.

Look back at the "is anesthesiology boring?" and "why choose anesthesiology?" threads. You will find a lot of answers to your questions there. I remember when I was a pre-med (I'm an M4 now) there was so much I wanted to know about, but it really only comes with time and exposure to medicine. I was crazy about surgery before coming to med school. I changed my mind about specialty about 4-5 times before happily settling on anesthesiology. How you feel about medicine, specialties, yourself, and your future changes drastically from year to year in med school. If you realize that now, you will save yourself a lot of headaches pondering what to do with your career in medicine. I think good advice for a pre-med is to keep your eyes open, and learn about as many different specialties as you can, while focusing on your primary goal, which is to become a doctor. That is what will help you persevere through all the times you throw your books down wanting to quit.

good luck!

Thanks Powermd, I'll go back and look at those specifically!

Also thanks for the advice, that seems to be the general sentiment amongst the people I've talked to here, but I think your explanation was the best 🙂

I do wonder if the moderator in here could make a FAQ with the info contained in the juicier information threads. The IM forum had this, and saved me a bunch of time looking at things.

I know a lot of people come in here looking for similar information, maybe we could get an FAQ together?
