Hey, hope y'all are doing well! Are there any D.O. Anesthesiologists that have matched into residency without taking Step 1 or just the USMLE exams in general? I am currently a 3rd-year medical student at a DO school and I am heavily interested in Anesthesiology. I got the Pass for Level 1, but I don't plan on taking Step 1. I do plan on taking Step 2, but I just wanted to see how many D.Os out there matched without Step and if you have any advice for me when applying to residencies as well as where to apply and how y'all did it. I know y'all must be busy, but any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Uhh… just take step 1, otherwise you’ll be an extreme (negative) outlier vying for a spot in a competitive field.

I’m sure there are DO anesthesiologists who haven’t taken Steps but anesthesia has only recently become a competitive specialty. Their experiences from 3+ years ago are not relevant to your chances now.

Pass step 1 because >90% of your current competition (whether MD or DO) will have done this. Take step 2 so they can compare you to other applicants. Do whatever you can to make it easy for them to rank you. Don’t willfully disadvantage yourself.

Okay perfect, you guys have been so helpful! so the majority are saying to take it, should i l focus on step 2 and then if need be, go for step 1?

You should 100% take it. Maybe 5 or more years ago there were folks that didnt take steps and matched but thats not how it is anymore with how competitive anesthesia is.

Focus on step 1 because you do NOT want to fail it.

I only took COMLEX, but that's because I was Army, and they didn't care. We're over-represented in military medicine.

Pass Step 1, work hard to get a great score on step 2 (240+) and that should set you up to match at a good/great program.

You should take step 1. It might be hard now because of rotations and the emphasis on step 2 with an actual score which is probably more important now. That said step 1 being pass fail might be more doable

With how competitive anesthesia is nowadays and with how people are applying to 2-3x the number of programs as in years past, I would imagine most ACGME residency's would filter out the lack of a score since there are so many strong interested candidates with the result.

With how competitive it is nowadays, they may filter you out just for being an osteopath. Check out the orthopedic surgery match list and tell me how many are D.O.s. Anesthesia is now similar.
