Why do you think there is so much animosity on SDN towards wealthier people when pretty much everyone here is (explicitly or implicitly) working to become wealthy one day?

Just curious.

Where have you seen animosity towards wealthier people on SDN? I'm not around 24/7 but I didn't know that was the case. And with obamacare we're not gonna be wealthy at all lol

-1/10 for trolling

Any thread pertaining to wanting to become a physician for the money.

The SDN response is: I think I just heard the time space continuum rip. 🙄

Isn't the purpose of working to make money? I don't know of anyone that works hard to be poor in the future.

Not trolling, just something I was thinking about. Every time someone talks about not taking out loans or whatever, somebody inevitably makes some snide comment about "oh, daddy's money" or "rich uncle". But there's a ton of people on SDN who will say "oh I heard that in ortho you can make blah blah six figures". If you save that maybe you'll be able to pay for your kid's med school one day. So it just seems hypocritical for everyone on here to be so mad about it now.

Mostly just wondering if anyone else has noticed this... guess not.

What's your evidence?

Can you provide a direct quote of someone saying something along the lines of this? I would love to read it and see what people said below it.

There's only a backlash when someone says something that is not true. For example, there was someone awhile back who made a comment that MOST med students didn't have to take out loans because they were fortunate enough to have parents fund their education. This is completely false, and this person was called out.

Again, what's your evidence? Show me a link to a thread that states this.

I'm just surprised that I found an SDN thread that didn't have "In" as the first response.

Fair enough. After reading a bunch of FAFSA threads and other threads, I just felt like there was a really negative vibe towards anyone who was not like totally broke. And it seems like people are always justifying any money they have, like "don't think I'm rich, I'm just a non-trad who saved really frugally!". Like there's some kind of culture of you-must-not-be-well-off to participate in sdn.

Didn't realize this was gonna make people mad or think I'm a troll haha.

I actually agree with you, I don't have any evidence off the top of my head, but I have also gotten this vibe from many SDN threads. Maybe not as extreme as you make it sound, but I think it's definitely true to some degree.

Eh, I've seen people post that their family is going to pay for med school and it hasn't been a big deal. I guess it depends on whether or not they are tone deaf about how fortunate they are. I see what you're talking about occasionally around here, but I don't know that I've ever seen someone directly attacked, just people sometimes expressing annoyance that some people get handed something easily for which others will have to work very hard--you see this sentiment everywhere, and I don't think it's any worse on SDN.

I was hoping this would be a thread about the general animosity all SDNers show each other, and how it makes this place a borderline malignant environment.

Ah well.

u mad at my ceo 10k/day ballerina status?

for realities though, those rich kids are probably partially funding the tuition for poor kiddies. and when they graduate maybe richy rich's dad will throw down some cash for a new library/hospital wing/poor people scholarship. merit scholarships don't grow on trees bro. and by bro, i mean never my bro.

I think the behavior is just typical of the internet, to be honest. It's more difficult on SDN where people are asking questions about their dream careers, and receiving an overwhelming negative response from certain members of the crowd who feel they're in a good position to be critical because, after all, they're going to be doctors. It's their job to be judgmental.

I've noticed it as well, but like Sin said, it's the tone. DoctorStrange is citing the most recent thread that went this way. I also remember something about who should qualify for need-based loans or something like that that got a little heated. Either way, more than anything I think it sucks when you see people glossing over the expense of medical school when it such a stressful and difficult prospect for the rest of us. It makes me sort of mad that I will have a long road of loan repayment in my future and those fortunate enough to have parents' money will not.

You can't let it get to you. You don't get mad every time you drive by a big house or a person with a fancier car then you, right? I'd have to imagine that the people who have parents pay for med school are in the minority anyways.

That's how society is. People tend to be hostile to individuals that they perceive didn't earn the money they have and simply had it handed to them.

Welfare recipients come to mind or children of the well off in this case.

I have yet to see someone get upset over a non-trad who made a lot of money in a former career. I don't think anyone holds it against those born to more fortunate families, I think they are more upset about the system itself.

This.

I definitely have observed these sentiments OP, which is why I avoid conversation about finances and just nod along when fellow pre meds groan about how much debt they're going to be in. There's really no reason to share with anyone else how much money you have or don't have.

non-trads have experienced life. pre-meds however are the opposite, and many of them are virgins

edit: myself included

One is wasting mommy and daddy's money for a better medical school "experience" and the other is choosing a specialty where one works hard for one's money.

I'm starting to think that every other thread started on pre-allo is a troll post.

As somebody who come from a less wealthy background, that only annoys me when the person acts like they did everything on their own without having an advantage. The old born on third and acting like you hit a triple. But most of the people here from wealthier backgrounds acknowledge their advantage.

Yes but also no as well as maybe.

It's not really animosity. Some people just get annoyed when one person from a family who makes 100k+ a year has certain stats and EC's claims to work just as hard for them as someone else who comes from a more disadvantaged background with similar stats and EC's. Sometimes, being annoyed by this is justified. Other times, it's really not a big deal.

I've never really seen much animosity towards people from well off families. People talk all the times about their parents paying for their education, and so long as they aren't throwing it in people's faces the reaction is usually along the lines of "**** you're lucky!" There is animosity towards people who seem obsessively fixated on the monetary aspects of this career, though I don't find that very surprising.

Actually that could be a worthwhile separate thread. That's what I thought this thread would be about as well.

Take a look at the for-profit medical school thread.

Nearly everyone was hostile toward for-profit entities.

😕 Hostile towards for-profit universities doesn't suggest hostility towards all for-profit entities.

I had two good friends in med school whose parents paid their tuition. One of them had wealthy parents. The other one came from a very humble background and his parents made the sacrifices that it took to pay tuition for both him and his brother. The latter didn't grow up in the lap of luxury by any stretch. His parents just agreed to foot the bill if he went to medical school.
