Anki vs Quizlet Long Term Learning: spaced repetition

Seems like lots of MCAT high scorers on SDN/Reddit utilized Anki and benefited from its spaced repetition algorithm. I believe Quizlet recently released a new long-term learning feature. Read more about it here: https://quizlet.com/help/2444098/long-term-learning

I personally found Quizlet a lot more user friendly and never gotten the hang of using Anki. I have been making cloze deletion cards on Quizlet (around 250+ so far) and will be using it to make more cards and to memorize content up until my MCAT test date.

Does anyone know if Quizlet's long term learning feature uses the same or a similar algorithm that the Anki software uses? Any comments to what the differences might be and which program might be superior?

Anyone who uses either or both are welcome to contribute! I also noticed that with Anki, there's no way an entire deck of cards like you can with Quizlet, making it more versatile but someone please correct me if I am wrong. I am open to using Anki if the spaced repetition algorithm is determined to be superior. Unfortunately, I am not sure of the specifics of either software and wondering if someone else happens to have any more info or has opinions.

anki is free. only the mobile app costs money. anyone can download the desktop app for free

Ha, thanks. Seems like I might need to make a call to both companies and see which representatives are able to defend their product!

This is true. I think a lot of SDN people end up purchasing the Anki mobile app (I believe the price is $25) since being able to study on the go is one advantage of making flashcards. The Quizlet long-term learning requires a $15/year upgrade to Quizlet plus but the Quizlet mobile app is free. They are both a lot cheaper than any MCAT prep course for sure!

$15 seems pretty steep to me. I haven't bought the Anki app yet because I've heard mixed reviews about it (and I spend most of the time on my laptop anyway). I've just finished making and going through my MCAT anki deck I made out of the Kaplan book set. I don't know how much it'll impact my score (I already took the MCAT once, without anki) but I do feel better about the material now. I can remember things that I made a card for two months ago (when I started). Its been a lot of work (about 2-3 hours a day every day for the last 7/8 weeks but the info seems to have stuck a lot better than before. I'll probably make an extended post about it after my exam - I was pretty active for the April/May 2015 MCAT threads. my new date is in september
