I feel a lot of my comments have been taken the wrong way (apparently I wasnt very clear)... Before I said all the stuff about Dentists cleaning teeth and not being real doctors I said that I do not actually think that, I was merely using it as an example - you can clearly see it in my post and must have just overlooked it...
Yeah, this is what you said on your second post on this thread, but your first post on your thread states your actual response to the dental students. Your response was totally demeaning. You said I will save lives, you will just imporove someone's daily living. You said I have to be really secure in what I'm doing b/c insecure folks will try to bash me down. Apparently, you do think that a little bit, b/c you said it to the dental students when they ticked you off.
Listen to Law2Doc. This is going to happen A LOT! Just blow it off. This will happen between MDs as well. Get used to it. "Why are you doing FP? Couldn't get into anything else? Why not practice real medicine? You spent all that time and money in med school, and you get a job that pays so little?" or "Radiology? Radiology?!? Why would you want to sit in the dark all day? You must not like people huh?" or "Anesthesiology? You know a nurse can do your job?" or "Dude, you're a man. Why are you going into OB/GYN? What are you thinking?" or "General surgery? I guess you enjoy being miserable."
Even if it's obvious that the person is a little out of line, just blow it off with something like, "Hey it's the only thing in med school I liked" or "It's what I always wanted to do". This usually ends the topic right there. Coming back with anything argumentative is going to burn bridges, and make your life more miserable.
Go check out some of the DO threads. This is a cnostant topic. Some students don't enjoy having to defend they're going to DO school, b/c they always got to put up with "Why not MD?". Some DO students also talk about how you're better off going to DO school than getting an MD. Similar to your encounter with the dental students who think it's wiser to get the DDS. My philosophy...who gives a ****? You're happy being a DO, good for you, and Im happy for you. If you challenge me for going into MD instead of pursuing some other degree...whatever...that's your problem not mine. I'm happy.
You'll see soon enough in the MD world that there are several physicians who think that the road they chose is the right one, and should be the path for everyone. If you pursue a different path you're an idiot, and they will state that. If you understand that the path you chose was the best fit for you, and it's not for everybody, and people can be just as happy as you are pursuing different paths or careers, you'll probably have less of a chip on your shoulder.
