Hello Everyone,

My wife is currently in a Family Residency program and I was wondering if anyone can comment on average salaries for a Family Practician? I was told that the average makes about 150k a year but some make as much as 180k because they perform procedures. When my wife finishes the program what is expected in terms of annual income? Is there any benefits of opening up your own practice? Do doctors get bonuses? Any other opportunities for Family PHysicians?

Is this a dirty topic?

Any information that someone offers might help us out with negotiations in the future when she is done the program. Oh, which reminds me what kind of things can be negotiated when my wife accepts a full time position?

Anyone have experience with this?

P.S. We are currently on a j-1 and are thinking of working in an underserved area for a green card.

The range is very broad. It depends on what area of the country, how busy you want to be, how much ancillary staff you hire, how nice of an office, and if you are able to do any procedures.

150 I'd about right. You can make more money if you open your own practice and have some ancillary services such as bone density scanning. Keep in mind that doing that takes a lot of time. Running a practice is a great deal of work. a friend of mine opened his own practice and makes about 200k, but he does about 50 hrs of clinical and 20 to 30 hrs of time rnning the practice. Profit margins in primary care are so tight that you have to watch every aspect of your practice to make money.

being a j1 will make it somewhat harder, as Kaiser and the VA have some good jobs for fam med, but they don't take as many J1s.

IMO, if you are coming from a Socialist state where medical school was free, it makes perfect sense the US government and AMGs have a vested interest in leveling the playing field financially.

I have heard personal stories ranging from 80k to 375k. Do some simple searches for salaries and you can find lots of data.
