Just to let you know, anonymous MDapplicants.com profiles - i.e., the "top state school," "ivy league," "small liberal arts college" named profiles - will be ruthlessly and indiscriminantly deleted at the end of each application cycle if they are not updated to indicate a proper undergraduate school of attendance. It's just not as fabulously useful to future applicants not to have the exact school of attendance.

The same applies to profiles from previous years where people have not checked the "finished with the application process" checkbox - those profiles will disappear as well to maintain the integrity of the database.

Just a friendly reminder! 😉

I'll be back in January after I'm finished with boards and residency interviews to work on site upgrades as well - if there are any enhancements you'd like to see, let me know. Specifically, I'm looking to make it easier for people to use their profile like a "blog," since that seems to be a popular thing to do, and to improve the comment system if there are any problems anyone has noted with those.

hi xaelia, would it be possible to have an option in the state section for foreign/international applicants? and can we distinguish between pre-interview hold and post-interview? Thanks

and can we distinguish between pre-interview hold and post-interview? Thanks
Ooooh, I second that one. If you're pre-interview hold, you're kind of without classification options on mdapps.

and can we have an option not to include URMs in the searches? it would make for a more indicative result.

We might as well close this thread now, another troll is trying to take over.

i take offense to that comment. i'm not a troll, it's a genuine request. i have a pretty low gpa and will probably doing some more post-bacc work next year. it's frustrating to find a profile of an applicant that got in with a similar gpa to mine, but to only find out that they were a URM. look up my past posts if you have any doubt.

Did you ever consider the possibility that URMs found them useful?

It is a drastic request, not to mention a foolish one.

did you read what i wrote? i said, can "we have an option not to include" certain profiles! so if someone wanted, all they'd have to do is click a check-box on the side not to include such results. otherwise, they'd be included by default. geez.

I believe the request was for an option not to include URM profiles when searching. Which would be drastic in the context that mdapplicants doesn't currently have a field for "URM" (as far as I'm aware of), but in terms of making an extra field and including that in the search criteria.. not so drastic.

You didn't think the guy meant to delete all URM profiles, did you?

Maybe someone shouldn't pounce on every post mentioning URM as trolling if they can't read properly.😴

i think it might be what you're talking about as far as blog goes but to add "updates" with date stamps, which people have been doing manualy already and maybe allow people to comment on those updates specifically.

It would be nice to be able to search for rejections/holds/etc. Add ability to link to interview feedback for the schools.

graduate school searchability?
field for money spent seems to be a popular write in feature - add some fields and a sum feature?
more majors / minors?

I agree. I think that option would be really helpful to me, as well.

can you suppress the password from showing up every time I edit my page?

I would like to be able to search for people that were rejected from a certain school as well as ones that were accepted.

Sorry Baylor, I'm gonna have to go with the other guy. I know it is really bad to look at a profile and just assume someone got in because of URM, and I myself am definitely guilty of it at times, but URM does play a role - maybe not in every instance, but we don't know that. Thus it is better to give an option to exclude them from searches - not as a strike against URM races, but to include it in criteria for medical schools (which it definitely is, although not all the time by any means).

geez, woman, chill out. He was asking for the OPTION to enable/disable a search parameter.

When exactly is the "end of each application cycle" since schools often keep taking people off waitlists well into the next application cycle?

I don't think it's irrational to try and look at profiles that don't include URM status. It's not racist, it's not discriminatory. I'm a URM, it has helped, and anybody who thinks it doesn't is lying. I think it's reasonable to view profiles of people similar to them.

oh man, i'm going to start a thread called "which flavor ice cream should i eat when accepted." i'm going to see how long it takes before it, somehow, becomes a urm flame war.

Some white applicant would say chocolate sucks, it would just spiral down from there.

I would like a search option that distinguishes OOS and IS applicants. So if I search for University of (Public School), I can compare my OOS stats with other OOS applicants.

I wanted to apologize to chowchilla because I misread the post. You guys are right, it's reasonable not to include it in the searched (I thought he meant not include them at all).

Anyway, my apologies. 🙁

There is already a way to search profiles by ethnicity. So I see no issue with adding a search parameter to view URM versus non-URM. You can get at this in a more convoluted way already by searching independently for non-URM ethnic groups one at a time. It would actually be helpful to have that feauture as the stats for URM and non-URM admissions/interviews are frequently quite different (I'm not offering any value judgement by this comment though, it is what it is whatever your opinion is about it).

I second whoever mentioned the not having the password appear after updating the profile

Please don't do this. There is so much data in the "incomplete" profiles. I always just make sure my search includes the incomplete profiles, and you get so many more results than if you exclude them. A lot of people don't come back and "complete" them, so I think you would lose a lot of profiles.

I believe that already exists. You can search at University of (Public School) and also select for folks from/not from Public School's state.

The end of an application cycle is when the school year begins. I.e., the 2007 application cycle will end ~end of next August.

You can search specifically for out of state applicants by using the "Not From" state option in Demographics when searching for results from a specific school.

Xaelia, I don't know if you're aware of this, but the quick search function on the homepage www.mdapplicants.com is busted. I search for "acceptances" from school X, and it returns to me a TON of results, most of which have not received an acceptance from school X.

For instance, go to the website, click "acceptance," then select Albany Medical College. You'll notice 00736, the first result, never received an acceptance.

The actual search feature on the search section of mdapplicants.com works though.

Just thought I'd make you aware of it!

Whoa. Well, thanks for letting me know; it's fixed now.
Speaking of things broken, you never get emails when people leave comments, even though it says that you will.

yeah i used to get emails when ppl left comments. now i haven't gotten them for the past 2 months i kinda just have to check my mdapps on my own and discover that i have comments.

I've never gotten emails when people left comments, even though I checked off that option.

Would it be possible to generate an average MCAT/GPA for any search you do? Right now I have to paste everything in to Excel, and it would be really nice if the page would show it for whatever customized search I've done. Actually it would be really cool if more statistical tools in general were added like median, standard deviation, etc.

I also second not deleting those who haven't checked "process complete," as there are usually useful entries that just never got around to checking it.

Thanks for the site, it's awesome! 🙂

Hmm; a test of posting to my own comments generated an e-mail for me. Are you sure the e-mails from mdapplicants.com aren't getting filtered out?
Thanks for checking. I just signed in and had two new comments with no emails. I also did a test post with no luck. I've also seen others with the same problem. (Anyone else notice the same problem?)

What are the email address and "From" name the notification is sent from?

Another good thing to have would be standardized names for schools (i.e. drop down list with an option to type in a custom name if school is not listed). For example, I see stuff like UC Berkeley, UC Berkley, UCB, Berkeley, University of California Berkeley, etc. all meaning the same thing.

Maybe instead of deleting "incomplete" profiles, some indication if the profile has been marked "complete" would be nice, maybe like a banner at the top of each profile page or something like that.

Thirdly, perhaps a checkbox for "clinical experience", "research", or other common categories of extracurriculars could be useful.

Is anyone getting e-mails appropriately? Or does it truly not work for anyone but me? 😉

As for standardized college names...there are like a billion two and four-year colleges in the U.S. - let alone the world, considering we have some foreign graduates. It wouldn't be a whole lot of fun to make up that exhaustive list.

yea i've had comments on my profile, but never ever get emails for them.
i figure that thing is just broken.

Heh. Well, I'll look into it - if it's not a simple solution, it might not get fixed until after I take Step 2 later this month. Btw, there is an e-mail address on the website to report bugs and other problems. 🙄
Sorry, I never noticed it.

who else gets a "failed message" the first time you submit a comment? Then you have to go back and hit submit again. Freaking annoying 😀

No wories xaelia...the site is still great! good luck on your step 2s

I also have this problem. 😕
