Another anesthesiologist behaving badly

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We should have a sticky titled this for as often as it happens

Edit. Generally behaving badly, not sex trafficking specifically

Wow, out of 30,000 anesthesiologists, they found one pedophile. I'm so shocked! Just one? The FBI must not be doing their job. </sarcasm>

Why is this worthy of news?

Anesthesiologists are humans, all humans make mistakes, hence all anesthesiologists make mistakes.

To whom much is given, much is expected.

After reading the article, if true, the guy's an idiot. Even text messaging with an adult prostitute would be stupid, where it's illegal.

Another victim of midlife crisis, I guess.

This is like entrapment. Why do they do this kind of stuff? Like if the guy got caught with a 14 year old, ok put him in jail. But these set ups are just strange.

The whole situation is gross all around. On one hand, it's disconcerting that these kind of entrapment scenarios aren't a clear violation of civil liberties. They really, really had to goad this guy into saying yes when a part of him knew it was wrong and wanted to say no.

On the other hand, once pedophiles get started it's almost never a one and done thing for them.

The age cutoff in Mass for consensual sex seems to be 16, and he only wanted a 16 year-old. He's accused of attempted sex trafficking, not pedophilia. Still, what 50-ish male would even consider sleeping with a 16 year-old, especially one that looks like 14, not to mention paying for that (which should be illegal even where it isn't)?

Holy crap. I totally practiced with this dude.
Smart MF’r and very likable.
Well maybe not that smart after all. 🤯
His wife is an ENT surgeon. 2 kids.
People can really f’up their lives when they have it all.
10 year minimum sentence if found guilty.

Honestly, part of me feels bad for him… but who knows if this was a first time event.
Glad he was caught.
Hopefully nobody was hurt prior to his arrest.

I'm right there with you. I was talking about this with my wife. What if he NEVER would have done anything and was ready to walk away from this idiotic idea, but they basically coaxed him into it (based on his text to the "mom" saying he wouldn't do this but she's been VERY persuasive). But then again, maybe he does this all the time and that's just what he says every time.

Sucks for him, but glad his interactions were all with the cops and hopefully no kids have suffered previously.

you know the militant CRNAs are probably salivating over this on their AANA forums

This really draws an enourmous amount of negative attention to anesthesia as a whole. You are also 100% right.

yes it draws negative attention

but putting head in the sand doesn't change that,

if someone did something bad, doesn't matter if CRNA or anesthesiologist, we post about it here

50 year old sleeping/wanting to sleep with 16 year old is definitely not as uncommon as you think

I would think that paying the mother for sex with a nonconsenting minor--- doesn't exactly match the definition of age of consent at 16.

even if he "gets away" without the criminal charges, i think his reputation and career is ruined

I feel like this is a bit more than a “mistake”

A 14 year old??

That’s like 8th grade/freshman in high school.

There’s got to be more to the story here. Someone had to suspect this guy had engaged in similar behavior before or someone had a vendetta against him. He seems gross and a bit like a loser, but the conversation in the story shows someone is really working hard to persuade him.

Edit:

It seems like he responded to an ad and then actually attempted to go through with the transaction.

I called it a mistake before I read the whole story. I did not realize he actually showed up and paid.

Still, there are 30,000 anesthesiologists in the US, so, on any given day, one of them will do something dumb.

How somebody this dumb can be vice-chair of research beats me...

I think it’s just like to catch a predator type thing. I don’t have any sympathy. If it was just a prostitution sting with legally aged participants, then that’s one thing (although still not really a great thing to be doing as a physician with a wife and kids at home), but once it involves minors, I think it’s harder to empathize

Of course it doesn’t represent all anesthesiologists or physicians as a whole. Could have just as easily been a McDonald’s employee or investment banker

Agreed. The original story didn’t give the full picture with the ad and the actual attempted transaction.

I think “dumb” is a weak description for a sex-trafficking pedophile who happens to be a doctor. No, he’s not a “victim” of a “mid-life crisis.” He’s a pedophile who tried to pay a kid’s mother for sex with her non-consenting daughter.

Why are we quoting state laws for age of consent and using soft language to explain why it’s understandable for this grown man to want to have sex with a kid? Come on now.

They do this all the time in certain cultures and it’s not considered unusual. I, as a strict feminist from a country where some of this BS happens absolutely find this disgusting, but that is not my culture. Young children in their preteens are sold to old men for a bride price.
Whatever the case, not acceptable in the US. No excuses.

Wonder how much you would have to offer him to get him to sell his own kids cuz apparently he finds that acceptable

Tufts wasted no time booting him completely from their websites.
Of course. This is America. And his "friends" will stand in line to metaphorically spit on him.

It's never a surprise how spineless people really are, even the ones who preach forgiveness and love of humanity.

We actually don't know how many times he's done it. It may be the first. How dumb can somebody be to believe something like this is advertised in the newspaper, after the Epstein scandal, and only for $250?

Also, had it been consensual, and not transactional sex, it wouldn't have been illegal in Massachusetts. Yep, their age of consent is 16, even if the other party is an adult. So the dumb part was paying for sex, instead of courting a 16 year-old (which I wouldn't approve of either, but I didn't write the law).

I don’t know about you, but I always rally behind my sex-trafficking pedophilic friends no matter what because I am a very forgiving, spine-full American.

I mean, as long as it’s legal, am I right?

How do you know he doesn’t have friends loving and supporting him while he’s sex trafficking minors? Tufts is protecting itself as an institution…not unlike another large hypocritical institution that people devote their entire lives to. As a society, we place more value and importance in institutions than we do in individuals.

Let he who has not answered an ad to purchase a minor cast the first stone. Is there a Groupon for that?

That dopamine rush when the Likes keep coming in for a witty post... 😉

Maybe it's the contrarian in me, but I think having a spine is, many times, exactly about going against the herd, against the mob. Not bending like grass with the wind. It is not about choosing the "right" thing (one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, plus usually the facts only come out in a court of law, not that of public opinion). It is about choosing the HARD thing.

For example, "thinking slow" (in a Kahneman fashion) is hard. It's much easier to let instinct, paleocortex, fast thinking take over, especially when living in such a stressful society. Go with the herd, with the mob. An eye for an eye. Virtue signaling. Shunning. Canceling. Etc. That's the easy way. Nobody will blame you for that. Nobody will make fun of you for that. Nobody will point a finger at you for that. But those are easy choices.

John Adams was hated on by an entire Boston for defending a British soldier... That's hard.

If it's not hard... it's probably spineless. If it sounds like one is part of a mob, even virtually on social media, it's probably spineless.

Forgiveness is also hard, especially when going against the herd... That's why it's so appreciated in various religions. Those who like passing judgment and casting stones also tend to forget that, while they may not have committed that particular sin, they surely have committed plenty others. And this is coming from an agnostic.

Now far from me to suggest I would be different or superior; I am not. I am just trying to do more hard things than I used to. That's also a form of midlife crisis, much better than buying sex with younger women or girls.

As one ages, one accumulates knowledge (history, religion, philosophy), and one starts seeing patterns. This is one of those.

Are you comparing a guy attempting to pay someone else to allow access to a minor for sex to John Adams?

You’re either just being contrarian to be contrarian or you’re weird. No one is calling for this guy’s execution, so I’m not sure about the overly dramatic response here. This guy (rightfully) lost his job and will probably face some serious legal consequences. He’s in a position where vulnerable people in public place their trust in him. He was willing to violate that trust and thus the response that might seem out of proportion to what some other person might face in a similar situation.

If you re-read my post... slowly... you will notice that I was talking about what it means to have a spine, to take the hard road, to stand up to the mob mentality. And, in that context, I was admiring John Adams.

Sure…but for someone who thought long and hard and decided sexual trafficking a minor (rape) was a good idea? I’ll save my spine for something else.

I have no idea what you’re droning on about.

This isn’t a debate about college admissions, taxes, or racism. We’re talking about a grown man paying a child’s mother for sex with her child. There’s no “herd mentality,” virtue signaling, shunning, or cancelling involved in my choosing to say that this man is disgusting, his actions are vile, and he deserves to go away for a long time.

You, however, are starting to sound like a pedophilia apologist who is so “enlightened” because you’ve learned to “think slow” as to not rush to judge a man who very clearly went out of his way to have sex with a non-consenting child.

If not being okay with overt child sex-trafficking and pedophilia means that I’m spineless, then so be it. You don’t have to worry about GETA vs. spinal for my laminectomy.

As a principle, nothing is truly "clear", not even in a court of law (but that's the best we have), and definitely not in the press.

Again, this might be the contrarian devil's advocate in me, who grew up in a totalitarian regime, but as a principle, entrapment bothers me. I don't trust the State, especially since prosecutors tend to build (political) careers on cases like this. Since the average citizen commits 3 felonies a day, according to some, without even knowing it, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's much easier to entrap somebody than we would think. Also, this guy was a successful vice-chair of research.

You're promptly labeling me as a pedophilia apologist, just because I am playing devil's advocate. I remember that there was an ancient country where, if all members of a jury would declare a person guilty, the verdict would be not guilty and the accused would be allowed to go free. Whenever one tends to agree with everybody else, one should slow down and doubt oneself for a moment.

It also bothers me how some people are fast to spit on the same spot they were kissing just yesterday. Also as a principle. That's the spineless part I was commenting upon.

Now if it turns out that this guy is a habitual sex offender, who has hurt others before, I'll feel much better that he was entrapped and caught, before he could do more harm.

This thread is another proof why social media is so prone to misunderstanding and misjudgment, and simply not worth it. You don't know me, you don't see my facial expressions, you don't hear the tone of my voice, but you're pretty fast at jumping to conclusions about me.

I agree that it was uninspired and unwise of me to bring up this kind of discussion on this particular thread. It's best to reserve it to trusted friends and to the courts.

well what you are saying is the basic tenet of our judicial system. no one is guilty until they are proven guilty (or "innocent until proven guilty"). even if the available information we have seem damning. We don't have all the facts or the circumstances of what happened.

the court of public opinion has passed its judgement

Let's be careful with the use of the word pedophile. I'm not defending this guy by any means. His actions are disgusting. But people misuse pedophile all the time. A pedophile is sexually attracted to prepubescant children. Sexual attraction to a 14 or 16 year old sexually developed minor is NOT pedophilia.

He is innocent until proven guilty, but this is not some he said-she said scenario where the facts presented in court will be nebulous or unclear. The entire conspiracy to commit sex trafficking occurred in the medium of text and later, the crime, in person. There is documentary evidence showing his thought process and how the crime occurred. Yes, at this point the texts are "alleged," but it's unlikely prosecutors and law enforcement are releasing wholly fabricated messages to the Globe....unless they're keen on paying a multimillion dollar settlement later.

In this case, having some degree of harsh public opinion judgement against the man at this stage seems eminently reasonable. The people who we should really be trying to protect from undue scrutiny and judgement are his wife and family.

Uh oh, time for the "well, actually, it's ephebophilia" portion of the thread. Good luck with that chief

You’re right. My mistake. Let me not lump the ephebophiles in with the pedophiles.

I’ll be more careful next time with my words describing grown men wanting to have sex with children of varying stages of sexual development.
