Another Class Schedule Advice Thread

Hey,
I'm starting college in the Fall and am actually kind of nervous about my first schedule specifically.
This is my first year plan.
Fall 2010:
Calculus I
Chemistry I w/Lab
Intro to Jazz Music
Speech

Winter 2011:
Psychology or Sociology? Depending on what my school is offering, but I'll definitely take a pre-requisite course or two

Spring 2011:
Calculus II
Chemistry II w/Lab
English Comp I
Microeconomics?

Summer 2011:
Calculus III (required by school for BS, which I plan on completing since I'm really in no rush to get out of school because I'm still young😎 and it will definitely enhance my app)
English Comp II

I know the two latter classes of Fall 2010 are easy which make this schedule do-able, but the reason I'm a little nervous is because I don't know whether or not I should start off with Chemistry. Should I take Bio or Physics before Chem? I would like to start off my pre-pharm track on the right foot because I'll also be training for a marathon, doing community service, and looking for a pre-health club to join.
Someone please slap me if you think I'm making a big deal. Thanks. 😀

I don't think you need to do a winter course especially since you are in no hurry to finish. I would probably add Physics to your Spring 2011 schedule and then do Bio afterwards. Either way it shouldn't matter much.



PS. I am usually not much help in this department so I just wanted to throw that out there. Just bear in mind that you would still need to complete Gen Bio I&II, A&P I&II, Microbio and OChem I&II.

You should talk to a counselor and look at the pre-reqs. See if the classes you are taking now will let you take the next set of classes you want.

I would definitely not recommend that the OP takes Ochem in the summer. Good thing you said an example.😛 I would prefer to do the English or GE during the summer.

A lot of people I know took ochem during the summer. It was faster for them and "easier" in the long run. Taking ochem and q-chem together is very irritating since it takes a long time to do all the calculations. Same as taking p-chem and biochem together. It is do able, but a lot of people try to keep both separate, since it takes a lot of time.

Personally I just think ochem during the summer is easier, since you have less time to forget. Some schools will let you keep the lab separate, so you don't have to do the lab during summer.

Some pharmacy schools actually REQUIRED Courses w/ Labs to be taken in long semester.

That's the exception though. I was talking about the level of intensity and face pace. Some people may have a difficult time adapting to it.

Agreed. I just finished Ochem 2 in the summer and LOVED IT! Ok, maybe that's a stretch, but I definitely liked it a lot better than taking it during a regular semester like I did for Ochem 1. It is definitely dependent on the person though. I, for one, have long since gotten used to the fact that I have no social life and therefore was ready for an intense course that took up more time than a full time job.

I think I would've loved it if all the BS didn't happen. Now the Science department is gonna have to evaluate our grades individually to try and come up with a fair grade. A lot of people failed but our professor said that he was really proud of us because regardless of all the issues we had to endure, we never gave up and we really tried our best. He said given the circumstances, the majority of us did well.
