DAT scores are in, and I am amazed…

QR: 22
RC: 24
Bio: 22
Gen Chem: 20
Orgo: 25
PAT: 22
TS: 22
AA: 23 (98.4%)

Kaplan: I consistently scored 19s on all bio/genchem/orgo…usually like 80+% right. PAT: 21/22 average QR: 23 RC: 23
Topscore: AA for both 3 times was 22, 19/20 for the sciences, PAT: 21/23/25 QR: 24 RC: 29 (all three times…but I knew that wouldn’t happen on the actual DATs)

I’ve been on this site for the past 2 weeks, freaking out about my exam, trying to compare my Kaplan/topscores w/ everyone to see how I would do, and just as a break from studying. I had originally devoted this entire summer to studying…but that didn’t happen very well. I took the Kaplan course twice, their higher score guarantee thing…but really learned absolutely nothing the first time. didn’t start studying (like more than 2 hours a day) until 2 weeks before the exam. I pretty much locked myself in my room and lived with my textbooks. I didn’t study for QR or RC at all…I mean they’re like the SATs, how hard could they be? But I didn’t know ANYTHING about gen chem…u actually have to know equations…think…and then apply them. whats up with that?! Haha. I thought the bio/gen chem sections were SOOOO hard. I got to my 15 minute break, and I was like…I can’t believe I just failed. I honestly thought I got 16s across the board. they were so much harder than any of the practice tests I had gotten before. Towards the QR, I was just like…why am I still taking this test, theres really no reason to, nothing can pull up 2 16s…and then they were calculating…longest 30 seconds of my life, and I was just thinking to myself, I can’t believe I just ruined my life by failing one test…hahaha…there goes my plans. And then the scores came up…and just WOW…I guess theres a really big curve? There were some weird bio and chem questions, I got the sea urchin one. QR was really really easy…but by then I had given up. WAY easier than kaplan’s. my RC were asteroids (ridiculously easy) x-ray (pretty easy) and glutamate/neurological receptors? (I was bored by then so I didn’t really read it carefully, I actually have no idea what the passage was about, I just did the road mapping thing and matched up key words). So I would like to apply to Columbia/Penn as my reaches…but I don’t really have any experience yet. My GPA is around a 3.7, Bio GPA is 3.6. I still have to physics and 4 more bio electives though. If I start building experience now…do I have a chance? I haven’t even started my applications though…is it too late? I’m also a junior in college, but w/ these scores now, my parents are making me graduate early to save money...so i'm pretty unprepared.

You should definitely retake the exam.

They are going to think that you cheated with scores that high. Did you ever see the movie "Stand and Deliver"?

Great job on the test! Best of luck in your preparations and don't knock yourself out with classes now - there's plenty of time to do that in D-School. There's still time to apply too!

stay in school. no need to rush things. a well rounded education (esp with lots of liberal arts classes) from a school like nyu'll make you highly sought after, because a broad education promotes better decisions. most people on here are from lesser-known schools. Some'll have killer numbers, but they'll rarely have the education and judgment afforded by a highly respectable school. please don't let a year's tuition take your college degree from you. it's the one solid thing you have over many other future dentists.

If I were you I'd get to work on my application and try to apply to start dental school next year without a degree.

You should immediately start working on your AADSAS application and contact dentists trying to find someone to shadow. You will also need to get letters done. There is a chance that you won't get in since you'll turn your application in a little late and won't have a degree, but with those scores and your GPA I'm sure you'll also have a good chance of getting in somewhere.

Undergrad degrees are overrated and if your parents are not rich I think you should at least try to get in to dental school this cycle to reduce their costs.

When do most people get their applications into penn or columbia by? I'm actually in a special program at nyu where i'm already in nyu dental school...but i really don't like nyu. I'd actually graduate with a degree in three years though, because i have enough AP courses from high school to cover the credits. But that would mean that i wouldn't have as broad an experience as everyone else. That coupled with inexperience, late application and what i think is relatively average scores (DAT and gpa wise) for those two schools, should i bother with the applications? does anyone know about second year transfers? thanks for all your support!

You are among the strongest applicants. You just need to start taking steps to get where you would like. Good luck.

Very strong scores, great job! Your experience with Bio and Gchem is different than mine though, I felt that on the real thing they were easier than my practice exams.
