Ok so I will apply summer 2012. As of right now my extracurriculars are as follows
Research: 1 full year, I am now the leader for my project, training other undergraduates. I will most likely be doing this until I apply and beyond
Fraternity: 2 years as an active- Previous positions: Membership Education Chairman, Scholarship Chairman, currently Recruitment Chair
Volunteering: 6 Months Hospice volunteering (2 hrs/wk) will continue
I also play classical guitar and climb rocks

I know, this is rather weak as of now but I plan on starting hospital volunteering and shadowing this semester ASAP. Do you guys think the time frame indicated is enough to boost my EC's to a competitive level or should I consider applying the year after what I'm currently going for? If you guys have any tips/ suggestions I would appreciate it.

This summer you can get in all the necessary volunteer/shadowing work done, no problem.
Also, try to get involved with some volunteer/community service non-related to medicine.
