I've been searching around on the other threads but I have a question. I know that you have to be 18 to get your license so when should I start taking the classes?

How old are you now? My son is planning on taking his EMT-B his senior year in High School, and testing when he turns 18.

Check with an instructor or something to make sure, but I think you can start the class and as long as you're 18 when you take the test you're fine.

It all depends on what state you are in. If you want NREMT, you have to be 18, but in my state (NJ), you can obtain a state certification at 16. Actually, thinking about it, NJ did away with the National Registry test recently so you can be 16 and an EMT in NJ

Similar to KD1655, in CT you have to be 16 to get a state certification but 18 for national registry.

Some NR states also allow for a state-test option for those under age 18 (NJ used to before they did away with registry.)

You can take the class and test at 16 (in Georgia at least), but no service is going to hire you until you are 21. I got my EMT at 17 and couldn't get hired for anything but a patient care tech, and that was in 1993. I am sure things haven't gotten less restrictive. Thank you insurance companies.
