I was invited to X school on Friday for an interview. I was SO ECSTATIC!!! I e-mailed and also left a phone message for the coordinator to reserve a date. Over the weekend, I told my family and friends about this school, thought about reserving plane ticket, read and re-read school information from various books, etc.

This morning, just as I am about to confirm my invite via phone, I check my e-mail. Then there is an email from interview coordinator. Titled "wrong e-mail address"

I was told that my e-mail address was typed wrong, and to disregard my previous e-mail message.

I am SO UPSET. I can not believe how unlucky I am. I am SOOOO sad about my situation. I heard about NYMC making mistake before, this is not the same school. How can someone make a mistake like this and break one's heart? Don't they have a pile of "interview" file and then type the e-mail off of the invite file? 🙁

Thanks for listening.

I think that is pretty sad and absurd when schools make that kind of mistakes and leave people heart broken. I mean how long does it take to verify a damn e-mail add. I am sorry that it happened to you but dont loose hope , hopefully another invitation will be on its way soon.

I think that is horribly unprofessional of the school. Do you have an advisor that could make a complaint on your behalf? Perhaps after the entire process is over. How can schools be so insensitive? I hope the rest of the application process goes smoothly for you.

i posted earlier about my friend who got a call from cornell MSTP congratulating him on getting in, and then being called 20 minutes later only to be told that the guy read off the wrong list and he was, in fact, waitlisted.

I'm sorry you had to go through such a dreadful experience. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I'm sorry tryingtobecomeMD, that really sucks. I know how you feel, cuz I got that NYMC email and told my parents and everything, only to read the next email that it was a mistake....although they did wait longer to tell you, so your school is worse. I'm sorry it happened to you. Med schools should get their act together--we're paying them enough money!

hey trying2becomeMD, I think we got it from the same school. I was exactly the same way, ecstatic, told my family and replied eagerly to the email. looked into travel arrangements...boy did I get a sick feeling after getting the second email. I didn't understand it at first...I mean, you just don't think that that sort of thing could happen. "please disregard the previous message???" do they know how hard it is to DISREGARD the previous message??? i'm glad someone feels my pain.

Was this Cornell? This sounds like something Cornell would do.

I firmly believe that any organization, especially med schools, should be more careful with sending e-mails. While e-mail can expedite the process and save the sender $0.34, they need to be certain that an e-mail address corresponds to the recipient. At least with mail invites, e-mails, rejections, someone needs to go into a database and take all the addresses and match them up to the applicant!

that makes me so mad! I wish we could form an organization on behalf of students to prevent this from happening. It is unfair, not right, and the schools seem to think they are above us in all ways. My heart goes out to all who have had this experience done to them. Good luck...

these stories are ridiculous...after all the money, time and effort...not to mention, FEELINGS!!! It's definitely not right... 😡

Ouch that must really hurt. You think with all the time and energy we spent in applying, the least they could do is keep email addresses straight. What's next?... An error on an acceptance letter.

I don't understand how they could let something like this happen. That is soooo cold!
Medical schools seek compassionate, capable people. Yet, the admissions process is filled with lapses and lack of empathy on the part of med schools.
I'm really sorry this happened to you.

Thanks for listening.•••••Hope you saved the e-mail. It's like teh grocery store : If they run an ad in the newspaper advertising carrots for 79c/ lb and the paper prints the ad for 30c/ lb, the store has to sell them for teh advertised price. You should be able to sue that school for emotional damages....I AM SERIOUS. At the very least they should be forced to follow through with their interview, and if they don't get an atty. This is Bullsh*t

I fully agree with you smythe, what is the law like for these sort of invitations. I mean, can they just retract their offer that easily? Also, their email was very nonchalant--not even recognizing the full gravity of their mistake. saying "so sorry but..." I think that they should have the dean of admissions write an explanation to acknowledge just how much they screwed up and how incompetent their office staff is. okay, i'll stop venting and move on with my life!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Even now, every time I read the post, it makes me sad. My parents were very empathetic to this situation, but I can't help feeling really mad at myself that I am not worthy of the interview there. You know, if my scores and other credentials were better, the coordinator could have said "wait, this applicant IS worthy of the interview spot, so let's just have her keep it."

I appreciate your opinions, it sure makes me feel better now that I know I have others who care for me. The entire application process has made me feel like a number, and when I got that impersonal email, my feelings were hurt even more that they were just addressing me as a low-life person who is not even close to their standards for the interview.

I am going to try to move on, but this experience will forever be etched in my memory.
