Good to hear, but why did you have to troll this over into the nursing forum onto a thread about CRNA's? We complain about S/CRNA's coming onto this forum and inciting arguments all the time...no need to stoop to that level and do it back to them.

Just to let 'em know who the boss is!

Who would that be? The patient, right?

Patient as the boss? Are you serious? If you are, then the answer is a hell no.

Patient is the principal (as in, one to protect, to keep from harm, i.e. never lose the principal). The surgeon / ob is the client (i.e. make the client happy so they will come back).

If you let the patient become the boss, you relegate medical decisions to the least qualified individual. This stance is not contrary to informed consent. If you think it is, read your hospital's consent form again and again.

Yes, I am. At end of it all, after all that is said and done, the "patient" has the final say about anything.....they're the boss....

So you two would do what the patient wants? Even if it against your medical judgement?

That is amazing. I applaud you for your tenancity. I am sure I could not practice that way.

You don't practice...you're a resident....essentially, a scum eating slave....You don't have the right to applaud.....

You do what your attending tells you to do....Finish your residency, read a few journals....pass your boards....then we'll talk.

Done. done and done.

Maybe because you practice for the military that you do not fear lawsuits, come out in the real world where you are liable. Not just where you can hide from lawyers your opinion on doing what is best for the patient will change.

I always do what is best for my patients. I give them choices on treatment plans, if choices are available. I never think they are the boss. You may, but you have the protection from lawsuits. What do you care?

We can turn this into a flame war, but I will quit this thread and forum long before that. I joined this forum for one thread. If you do a search it will be easy to spot.

One day a patient will ask you something unreasonable and flat out unsafe. With the attitude of the patient is always the boss, you will be in a bad situation. Sometimes the boss wants you to do something you know is wrong, will so still do it? Or, will you say you can't and then try to pawn off their care to someone who will make the right decision?

I'm in private practice...and I'm the Medical Director of our OR, and I'm assistant chief of the department of anesthesia at our hospital....

I'm right up front and in your face to all the patients and surgeons....no lawyers to hide behind.

Patients are the boss...everyone knows it...the sooner you figure it out...the more successful you''ll be.

The days of the "patriarch" doctors are over. There is the internet....information is everywhere.

Patients are consumers who know what they want.

As for lawsuits, it is common knowledge that the majority of the time that they occur is because the patients did not like their doctor, and not because of a standard of care issue.

So true about the patriarch doctor thing. We were just talking about this in school yesterday...The days of when the doctor's word was law and patients were expected to do whatever he thought was best are long gone. The problem with the patriarch doctor model was that compliance with doctor's orders was seriously lacking. If you let the patient be in charge of their own care, they are much more likely to follow the treatment plan.

Liver, it IS obvious that you haven't been on this board too long, because you would know that MilitaryMD has proven himself to know his sh** time and time again.

I would really encourage you not to troll on the Clinician (RN/NP/PA/CRNA) forum. It really makes us look bad, and they wind up taking their frustration out on us, thus turning our good threads into flamewars. Please think about it...

In a way you're both right. I agree the patient is the boss, but that doesn't make us the servant. We reserve the right at any time to deny any treatment requests which we believe to not be in the patient's best interest or safety. Come on...we've all seen people who ask for crazy stuff that nobody in their right mind would give them.

I wholeheartedly agree; if someone has some inane request, it is summarily denied thereby clearly establishing ME as the BOSS.

Really huh? So concerned over who the boss is. Must have one of those inferiority complexes! I bet he drives a really big car or truck too!

My advice to everyone is don't let this guy bother you. He is one of those miserable little people that no one wants to be around, work with, or for.

Good job military and all those other experience physicians...he needs some whipping into shape! What a loser.
