Another residency question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I cant find any information about the hours worked during a podiatry residency. Is it like 40-50 hours a week or more like 60? Also is there a lot of on call hours?

It all depends on the program, which is why you can't find any specific information.

The best option would be to research specific programs and maybe post in the resident forum, or simply visit the programs website (if they have one).

If not, just call and ask to speak with a resident.

The CPME has not set any guidelines on podiatry residency hours.

Some programs follow the ACGME 80 rule. But this is an average of 80 hours over a 4 week span. This means that you could potentially work 120 hrs in one week then 60 the next.

During residency, depending on the rotation, I worked anywhere from 40hours a week to 120 hours a week. I'd say that most weeks were closer to the 80 hour limit.

In addition to my post, I loved residency. I loved working that many hours.

I talked to a podiatrist when I started residency (not affiliated in anyway to my program) who had been out for 5+ years. He told me how much he enjoyed residency, it should be the best years of my professional life, and as long as you have co-residents you will not have the same dynamic of friendship and comradery (sp) after residency. Even though I already planned to enjoy residency, I took this advice to heart and made sure to take advantage of all opportunities and really enjoy my 3 short years.
