no matter how much i plan, something goes wrong...
ok, so i found out i can't do an EM rotation at my home institution at the time i wanted. my alternatives are to :

1-not do a home rotation and just do 2 away...but that may look funny to other programs and would hurt my programs feelings.

2-move things around and do my home EM rotation in october-this scares me because we finish on oct. 20, but i think that would be rushing the letter writer? aren't letters due on nov. 1? would that be too close?

3-cancel my wilderness elective and do my home EM. 🙁 i really wanted to do this elective, but this would give me a month to do research or sit around and post on SDN.

any ideas or other possibilities you guys can think of? any advice is appreciated.
thanks

I did two away rotations and never did a home rotation. It didn't hurt me at all, but I guess it does depend where you do them...

Can you move your wilderness elective? I dont think this will help much in getting your residency. You need your letter by Mid Nov so being done by Oct 20th isnt bad at all. It would give them almost a month and if you are up front about it they can usually make it happen sooner than later. Like I said a buddy of mine went into EM late.. and did his FIRST em rotation in Oct and he got a ton of interviews... So hope this helps..

Thanks guys!
i think i'll try and do my rotation in oct and be upfront about i need a letter ASAP. unfortunately, the wilderness is only offered one month so i can't just swap it around.

for some reason, niner, i think you are from my school. glad to see you had no problems without a home rotation. i don't know if i want to hang around here much longer, but i know the ED pretty well and hope that will lead to a good letter.

etopic, as always, calming words of wisdom...

thanks again

yeah they should find a way for you to be able to do an early rotation though, maybe if you talk to someone and tell them you want to go into EM. I think most programs will hope you have a good/strong letter from your home program, but I guess if you have an away EM scheduled, thats cool too.

yep, I completely agree! i;m going to plead my case tomorrow and see if one more student from the school can rotate early on. I'm not loving 4th year scheduling so far, i sure hope the year goes better!

I'm would think maybe if you talk to them, they can squeeze you in somewhere as an extra spot, without having to make someone else move. I guess it might be harder at the start if they are really at max and can't have more students so that there aren't 2 students in the same area.
