Hello all,
I know many before me have posted the same question but I just wanted some advice on my perceived chances of getting in to DO school:
Undergrad GPA:2.90 (failed orgo x 3) 🙁 - B.S. in biology
Currently taking 2 graduate biology courses @ local medical college.
Tons of extracurricular experience/job experience in medicine
Medical assistant/nursing assistant x 5 years, EMT x 3 years, Red Cross volunteer x 8 years
Mcat: to be updated tomorrow (Crossing fingers)

Any thoughts ?
Thanx

An amazing MCAT could probably help with the low gpa. Maybe you should ask again after you have seen your score.
Best of luck!!!

It ALL depends on your MCAT score... If you could get a 27-30+ range you'd probably be fine! If not, then it will probably be difficult... But as everyone always says "THEY LOOK AT MORE THAN JUST YOUR GRADES"... Good luck!!

I got a 21P MCAT and have a 3.5 GPA and have gotten four interviews + 1 acceptance so far! Just to make you feel good 😀

update us w/ the mcat and then we shall see 🙂

😕

Wow... I would say that the 10 in Biological might offset the F x 3 in orgo. Plus, great Verbal and written. You should be fine...but get those apps in asap. Good job!!!! 👍

Doubtful, a 10 in bio isn't that hard to pull

For example, I failed orgo 1, orgo 3, and biochem and I got a BS score of 13.

I retook em all, obviously and got into both schools I applied to: OUCOM and CCOM

so if your score in bio offset the Fs, why won't his? Or do you just like to brag about the 13?

I think a 27 is a great score for DO schools. You should do quite well! No worries!! Congrats! 🙂

10s anywhere are good! But agreed, the bio section is probably the easiest to score high in for a couple reasons. But a 10 is still solid!

i wouldnt pay too much attention to the comment about a 10 in bio being that easy to score. if it was that easy... wouldnt 10 be the avg instead of 8?

you did pretty well on your mcat and you should be accepted to an osteopathic school provided you interview well.

I was just pointing out that # of questions-wise and the fact that a bulk of MCAT takers are bio majors makes the bio section in general a bit easier to ace.

A 10 in ANY section looks great and solid! good job! 27 is good for DO schools, really good!

Because a 13 is a lot different than a 10.

The fact that most test-takers are bio majors would actually make it harder to do well. In theory, most would get alot of questions right. When scores are distributed on a normal curve, the scores would be scaled down to make the average score 8ish. In other words, it doesn't really matter how many questions you get right. What matters is doing better than everyone else. If everyone else is a bio major, then you have really tough competition in that section.

In response to Buckeye's statement concerning MCAT scores, in your view did the 13 in BS help offset your problems with orgo and biochem ? Also, does everyone think that extracurriculars and medical experience can help overcome GPA deficiencies ?

I'd like to echo that question. I've got a 2.9 post-bacc GPA at present, undergrad 3.3, and have just started post-bacc physics.

Recently I took the 3R practice MCAT and got 7 phys, 8 bio, 14 verbal. I'm hoping the science scores will go up once I learn some physics, not to mention reviewing gen chem and bio which seem to fade away at an alarming rate.

I'm a history/language kind of guy and I find these science exams quite challenging; generally I average about a B. I mostly wrote papers in college so this multiple choice and short answer stuff really floors me. However I'm pretty good at standardized tests and I expect to do well over a 30 MCAT once I'm past my Kaplan course and so on.

The AOA website suggests the mean GPA is around 3.3, and mean MCAT around 25. Am I totally dreaming or do I have some chance? Thanks for any (gentle) advice!

what schools were you accepted to?
