Hey all,

I'm new and dont really know the ettiquite on SDN forums, but I wanted to know my chances at getting in to a school like Western (or any school). I'm applying this June and would love some feedback.

Here are my Stats- 3.67 GPA (probally more like 3.60 in june 🙁 )

As of now ~60hrs volunteering in a dental clinic

Secretary of my fraternity/ serving on the executive board.

I will be TAing a bio class next quarter.

Havent taken the DAT yet, but I expect fair results.

Thanks in advance everyone!

No chance since you don't have a DAT score.

With a good DAT score then you have a shot.

Hey there,

Looks like your GPA is looking great and even with the small drop by June you'll be fine in that sense. What is your science gpa and your cumulative gpa? Those would be helpful in knowing where you stand. I would definitely suggest that you up your hours volunteering and try to get a wide variety of different types of volunteering. For example, try to volunteer at an ortho clinic, pedo clinic, general practice, perio clinic, etc. It would be nice for you to show that you have a good grasp on the different specialties when applying to school.

Also, what kind of volunteering do you have in the community that is not related to dental? It is obviously great to volunteer at clinics but you should maybe look into working with local community organizations to get hours. Maybe volunteering at a local YMCA or boys and girls club for example?

I think the fraternity exec board is a good thing, as long as you can show that you've gained leadership experience from it. I was the Rush Chairman at my fraternity and I served as the house manager for 100 students in the summer, recruited the largest class in the last 10 years, etc. So I can show that I have filled a leadership role from this job.

Just try to keep your grades up and finish strong before June, and make sure to get solid scores on your DAT and you'll be fine! Obviously it would be nice, but with your good GPA you don't need to kill the DAT to have a good chance at school. 19 or 20's across the board should be a pretty solid score for you. PM (personal message) me if you have any questions! AND REMEMBER, this is just my opinion! Other people may agree or disagree with what I'm saying, but this is what I've learned from my pre-dental experience thus far.

Good luck!! 👍

Enough said. Next please.

Thanks for all the responses everyone (even the snide ones...). I don't know how to calculate my science GPA, but looking at my past grades I would say its about the same as my non science GPA.
The clinic I volunteer at does all types of procedures so I am getting a broad view of dentistry. We have different specialists come in on different days, so i think im good in that respect.
My GPA will drop by June, however that is based on THIS quarter's performance (Ill finish strong). And its not my last year, Im a junior.
I have non-dental volunteer work through my fraternity, although it isn't necessarily documented. It can be vouched for though.

Finally I forgot, Im minoring in history, if that changes anything. Again, thank you guys so much for giving me things to look into. Im definitely gonna look into other sources of volunteer work!

Take the DAT and shadow (not the same as volunteering in the dental clinic). Even if your GPA drops to 3.5 .... you're still in good shape.
