I think that you need both the MD and DDS (or DMD) degree to practice OMS. I know that there are combined MD/OMS programs that are essentially residencies for doctors that hold the DDS (or DMD) degree.
As I have not thoroughly investigated dentistry, I could be wrong...
Currently I would say the answer is NO! Most programs are hospital based that accept DDS/DMD from US or CDN dental schools. Programs that confer the MD as part of a six year program post dental school. I've heard of one program cosidering a med school grad.ie new MD but that was years ago and don't know if it was truth or rumor.
Sounds like doc 227 was looking for a guaranteed track into OMS along with an acceptance to dental school. That would be like someone looking for a guaranteed track into orthopedic surgery along with their acceptance to medical school. Ineedanassociate is correct. The answer is no.
Correction, you do not need a MD degree to practice Oral & Maxillafacial Surgery (OMS)! An OMS specialization is additional 4 years of training after 4 years of dental school (a DDS/DMD degree).
However you are correct about OMS/MD degree available to DDS/DMD degree holders, but this is a 6-year training program in addition to the 4 years in dental school!
