Answers: SIU vs. UIC

The IL Board of Higher Education in Dec. released a detailed report on that state's dental education.

Among the highlights of the report: SIU performance on national and regional boards consistently place them in the top 15 dental schools. They ranked second on recent NBE with 96 % getting IL license on first try.

Report explained SIU doesn't do much research b/c there aren't enough faculty members or funding; they are a teaching college.

In contrast, UIC was commended for its research, but little mention was made of its graduates quality of education. In fact, I don't recall seeing scores for UIC listed at all. Makes you wonder.

Very true, SIU is a hidden gem. I got accepted to UIC, but I ain't going. I have not heard from SIU, and I haven't withdrawn my application. As of now, it looks like IU for me. Unless I get a call from Alton. 😎

Just got off of the phone with SIU, THE CLASS IS FULL. I am on the alternate list for the 3rd year in a row. Its bull **** if you ask me, especially since I have lived in this state for the last 25 years, and went to a public University.

Mel.... I would probably go to SIU if the Army schollarship falls thru. The in-state tution is a bargin, compared to IU out-of-state. But truly, academically I think IU is better, Indy is just a little cooler then Alton (not by much). IU was my first choice, but SIU might win based on the $$ aspect. If I get the Army its all Indy for me.

But this year its personal. SIU CAN GO F_U_C_K THEMSELVES. 😡 THEY HAD 3 TRIES TO GET ME, IU had no obligation to accept me, but they did, it just makes me feel more wanted. 2 previous years of rejection made me dispise UIC and SIU. 😛

When I went to the interveiw at USC, they've heard of SIU but not UIC. Funny huh? They didn't even know UIC has a dental school. That tells you something about UIC's dental school. And crazy me still going to UIC in the fall. What can I say, it's CHEAP!

i wouldn't call you crazy for picking UIC over Marquette or USC, I would just call you dumb :wink: , but thats not nice, so I would say that I hope you do well at UIC.

It basically states each dental school's program strengths, how much each school is funded, and lots of other info. Anyone interested in finding this book, can find it in a book store. It does state as of last year that UIC had a stronger reporting than SIU. This just goes to show that everyone source and every person has a different view about each school.. We are all going to dentists when we graduate. If you want to be a great dentist, you will strive to be the best, no matter where you go.

Toothfairy, you're right about that we are all going to be dentists. That's how I'm looking at it right now, so I don't feel too bad about going to UIC.
