Hi
Bill
Thanks for your reply...it makes practically a lot of sense....but i need to ask u a few things:
What is the critereon for applying to Master programs as u mentioned?
Most if not all the masters and Post Graduate Specialty Programs require the following:
1) Official Transcripts from your Dental school with a GPA from them and a copy of your Diploma
2) Official Credential Evaluations - from ECE or WES
3) 2-3 letters of reference - one from your Dean and others from Dentist you know ( also I will add that at least one of these letters aside from your dean should be from a dentist who has a specialty and is a certified member of that specialty , here in America it is called , example, Member of the American Acadimy of Prosthodontics or Periodontics whatever the field you are applying for.)
4) an essay or personal statement on your plans for your career ( this should be no longer then 1 1/2 or 2 pages long)
5) a C.V. or commonly known as a Resume( this is important because it will give the program an image of who you are and what you have done in your career as well as what type of person you are . You can go online and there are web sites that will show you how to do this , I will attach my resume or cC.V. and my personal statement to give you an Idea.
6) a picture of yourself

Are these too same way, soooooo competitive?
No , they are not easy to get in but the programs that Accept FTDs don't traditionally have the magnitude of compitition as do the Advanced Standing programs.Do they need GRE?
Most of the programs say they do but, I donot have it nor will I take it, because as I understand it , Your TOEFL score will be enough for them . I have not encountered a program out of the 5 programs I applied to that has told me I DEFFINATELLY NEED IT.
If yes any clue general GRE or special GRE?
The GRE , is a standardized exam in America there are no special types only one type.

I believe that AEGD requires a DDS degree,am i wrong?
As my research show all AEGD Programs that DO NOT have a "Special Program for International Dentist" do require you to have a DDS from America or Canada, the only exception I know of is the one I applied to which is University of Rochester NY. But you would have to see if there are more. Also remember that in order to practice and get a LIC. in America AEGD programs have to be 2 years long , my research show only the NY program has this , But my research was not extensive so you would have to check.
Can i do AEGD after doing part 1 n part 2?
YES remember you need at least part 1 passed to do ANYTHING ! Also remember your goal should be to have part 2 done as well . but it is not required.

Is it a good idea to do short term courses(certificate courses may be in health sciences for a 8 months or so) and then apply with part 2 scores next year?
YES!! If you have the time and resources to do it I would say YES!, I have a friend who took an Implantology course and he applied to LSU Prosthodontics and because he had that plus 1 and 2 of NBDE He was automatically picked. Ishould add that if I have the time I will do the same. Remember if you are going to do a course that gives you a certification , then ONLY CHOOSE A COURSE THAT APPLIES TO THE CLINICAL SIDE OF DENTISTRY AND NOTHING ELSE. STAY AWAY FROOM ACADEMIC COURSES LIKE HEALTH SCIENCES.The reasoning behind this is the schools and all the programs , in the end want to know to things about you 1) do you have the academic and clinical ability to be in that program and 2) more importantly can you make them money doing it by taking care of there patients. Now this is the unfortunate unspoken reality of our career here in America whether it be said or not that Dentistry in America both Private and Academic is Money driver, Do not fool yourself by thinking otherwise.
I am so near to UCSF and UOP and wish to volunteer there, especially in there Community Health Services department but i dont know,i am scared...?

Well you are in luck my friend. My Brother runs San Francisco with Mayor Newsome he is Mayor Newsome's Press Secretary and personal aid . so get me your resume and I will pass it on to the Mayor of S.F. and we will see about getting you into a Community Health Program. Also He is here in New York visiting so I will see him tonight and get you an answer by Monday!!!!!
So all this for now...and i am thinking of taking GRE but have no idea on it...as in which GRE to take and what all courses can i take after clearing GRE which might be an add on to my application?any suggestions.. My suggestion is do your research and pick your programs and then call them up and ask them if you have your TOEFL Will they need you to take the GRE and if you thought the TOEFL was hard then I will tell you that the GRE is 10xs as hard. That is not to deter you, you do what you want , But as for me when I think about doing extra things without researching my options first then I am only taking my focus and most importantly my time in putting my energy into the things I need to do for myself that will get me in some where and this is the most important part of our time out is getting in some how..I feel bad i am always on the asking end...i wish i could provide u with any help....dont hesitate ever...ok... No worries and believe me if I need help I will ask it is the only way I got to this point fo being able to help others.

and one thing out of curiousity what makes you listen and then reply so diligently to people u hardly know...
That is just me and who I am , I take great pleasure out of helping others it is what makes me enjoy life, I should also state that regardless of personal opinion and views the core reason of why I am the way I am is because I believe in God and My God says make a difference by helping others as he has helped us, I am a Christian , but not a catholic. So I know when I help someone , to me , It is Gods way of saying I love this person who I have created and he or she needs Help and You are the one that I can rely on to help them Honestly , so I consider it an honor to help anyone who comes to me l, because do not believe in chance I believe that everything happens for a reason. But that is just me I do not seek to change anyone or convert , but I will not lie when someone ask me questions such as these.
Do let me know what is going on at your end and what is your side of story on dental front...
As of now I am in a holding pattern I am studying for part 2 for December , and at the same time I assist one if not The best OralMax. Surg. in New York City in a Multi specialty High Yield Practice so this greatly compliments my studies for part 2.

Again I am here if you need me and Good luck and God Bless

Thanks Fixensmiles it was a very informative thread. hold on to your helping nature, many of us over here need it.

hi bill,
plzz help m out with this.....

wats the Transcript record?i hv heard its a record where grades r given 2 ur marks of all the 4 yrs of B.D.S along with the hours u hv attended .....
but i hv this prob tat my coll [in karnataka] says they they dont provide ny record by grading system... only hourly transcript is given...
frm where should i get the transcipt then...frm the coll or the university????
n also how many grades r included in this system... bec few hv only 4 grades..while sm others hv 7 grades[A,A+,B,B+,D,D+,H]
arent these grades fixed????
kindly reply m...
its urgent...

first did you get an ECE or WES report? I assume you did if you took the boards, so that being known I would say that when you hand in your ECE or WES You also must have a School Transcript information that you gave them to convalidate. So that paper work you gave to WES or ECE plus WES and ECE paper work and a copy of your diploma must be sent to all programs you apply to thats it. When you turn in your papers dont worry about scores as long as the WES or ECE GPA is 3.0 or better.Thats all that matters regarding this part of the application along with the other parts as well like board scores, letters of ref, C.V., personal statement etc. let me know if this answers your question.- Bill

no bill actually i did not get the ece evaluation done n i need the transcript 4 tat purpose only...bec i hv heard tat they need it 4 the evaluation....
wat do i do...
thanks...

so you did not take your boards then I assume. well goto http://www.ece.org/main/HomePage?OpenForm&SubSite=1&LeftNav=1
apply and pay and get it done.

then goto http://www.wes.org/ and apply there and pay and get it done.

you have to do this because
1) the ADA and the board will only except ECE evaluations from you so you can sign up to take part 1 of the NBDE. Now remember that ECE is only going to except your official paper work from your university so it has to go to ECE directly from that school

2) once you do that first , I recomend that you do WES, simply because when you pass part 1 and go for the interview process you will need both because some scholls except either or and the fact still remains that WES gives out the higher GPA.

so get on it . the longer you wait the longer it will be before you get into a program

Hi FIXENSMILES01

First, thnaks for a informative and helpful thread. I live in bay area and I want to do volunteer work in UCSF or UOP. Please let me know is it ok if I PM you my resume. Thanks again

Regards
Anushri

thanks Bill
thank u so much 4 ur response..it was really helpful 2 m...n will proceed with the evaluation ....
take care

hi

i have a question regarding WES evaluation.. can i send attested photocopies of my mark sheet.. will it work or they want marksheets directly from univ. as it would be very difficult to contact the univ. as you know how much you have to run if you r in person to get your work in india and now as i am here in us it would be very difficult to get hold of administration personal...
kindly give me advice.

thanks

they MUST BE ORIGINALS FORM THE UNIVERSITY, The only way they will except a noterized copy is only if the university has closed down. My advise to you is this , go to fed-ex or what ever currier service you wnat and fed-ex the request to the school with a pre-paid return to ECE address , if you know this will not work then dont do it , it worked for me and I know the country where I graduated from is VERY COMPLICATED AS A 3RD WORLD, but I did it this way and it got done. but you MUST FIND A WAY!! good luck-Bill

I should add i just read a thread at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=212423 that said ECE will except copies , so do your reseach Part of the thread agrees with me that WES needs originals sent directly from the school either way goto
http://www.ece.org/main/HomePage?OpenForm&SubSite=1&LeftNav=1 and check it out.

hi

thanks bill for your reply.. i ahve one more question in my mind and that is .. do wes require all the mark sheets of 4 years or just the final year will work. please answer this.. thankyou very much for your advice once again...

Most Univs require a general GRE..but some need a subject GRE too..so check for tht beforehand.

he or she is correect do all your research but i know for sure 100% because I have personal friends who did not have ECE and are in the following programs without GRE:

UNIV. INDIANA- PERIO
LSU-PROSTH
BU-PROSTH
TEMPLE-PERIO
UNIV.OF FLORIDA-PROSTH

NOW EVRERY ONE IS DIFFERENT AND I DO NOT KNOW IF THERE WAS ANY UNDISCLOSED SITUATIONS REGARDLESS OF MY KNOWLEGE .

SO AS THE THREAD BEFORE ME STATED ALWAYS DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ESPECIALLY HERE ON SDN , NOT TO SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT OUR GREAT FORUM ,JUST THAT THIS IS OUR AND YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND IT SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH , SO DO YOUR RESEARCH AND KNOW FIRST HAND FOR YOURSELF.- BILL
