HI

I have some questions. My cousin, a 21 year old male was sent after therapy to a psychiatrist because he has some depression caused by his weight problem. He is overweight and became a very insecure person, which caused depression on him. He has tried to anti-depressants. Effexor and Lexapro. He stopped taking these because of the sexual side effects. As he said, the sexual side effects became worse then the depressed moments he was having. He has been doing some research and I ve helped him a bit. So far we have found that "Wellbutrin" Bupropion is an antidepressant which has the less side sexual effects and shows no weight gain. Looks perfect for him. I also read about Luvox. WHat do you guys think? Is there any other anti-depressant of which you guys might know that has no sexual nor weight gain effects? He has an appointment in 5 days, I will really appreciate any information.

Sincerely,

Eduardo

hey eduardo,
There is a fairly new drug called serzone which is an antidepressant that has no sexual side effects. Also, psychiatrists may use stimulants such as ritalin to counter the sexual side effects caused by antidepressants. HIs psychiatrist should know all this though. feel free to ask any more questions

good luck!

Cyproheptadine, a rarely used anti-histamine (as well as slight anti-serotonergic) has also been used to decrease sexual side effects associated with SSRIs.

Thanks for your responses guys....ALso, he has some slight OCD, but this ocd occurs when his anxiety is a bit up, but nothing to bad. SO it looks, like serzone and wellbutrin are the meds to look at , right?

hey eduardo,
Serzone has yet to be proven to be fully effective in the control of OCD but it is currently being looked into...the results so far of their studies have looked extremely positive. Tell him to ask his psychiatrists about that.

Wellbutrin is a SSRI and therefore it is possible that your cousin might have sexual side effects as a result...but yet it depends on the person.

Good luck and let me know what he decides.

Peace

Hey KUmar

Thanks for the response.

I read that serzone causes liver damage, what do you know about that? I ve been researching online and many websites say that. Also, are you sure wellbutrin is an SSRI? I read somewhere it wasnt. Many people and psyquiatrist say it has a low % of sexual side effects. I hope you can answer this, sincerely,

Eduardo.......

The following was plagiarized from www.rxlist.com (great website, by the way).

"The neurochemical mechanism of the antidepressant effect of bupropion is not known. Bupropion does not inhibit monoamine oxidase. Compared to classical tricyclic antidepressants, it is a weak blocker of the neuronal uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine; it also inhibits the neuronal re-uptake of dopamine to some extent."

Hope this helps.
