As someone who was clinically depressed 2ry a situational crisis during part of medical school, I would recommend that you get your head straight before starting, deferring for a year if necessary. Having said that, many students I knew had some history of mental health issues -- as they say, med students are often Type As (not my particular problem) and are at high risk of having MH problems (anxiety, depression, breakdowns, acute psychotic episodes...), but a mere *history* doesn't mean you can't be a good student or doc with good coping mechanisms, and resilience. Personality disorders that you'll occasionally come across (including on the forums) on the other hand are IMO an entirely different matter...
