Any 2012 UNM applicant's

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have, but haven't heard anything except for reminders to send my transcripts several times. Nothing else. Any new update from UNM for you?

Not at all. I just checked my OTCAS and apparently my recommendation letters are not all complete yet! Man this is frustrating. I will let you know when I get an update!

Hi! I also applied to UNM and I'm pretty sure that since they are not on rolling admissions they may not be sending out any interview requests until they receive and review all applications. I think the date is in early Dec. Don't worry quite yet 🙂

I'm not worrying yet, I just wanted to see who else is applying to UNM. 🙂 I'm out of state so I already know my chances are pretty slim. You think the date is early Dec? Do they process them that quickly?

I hope I hear something soon. I submitted my OTCAS a couple months back with everything complete. They are the only school that haven't e-mailed me saying that they received my OTCAS application. I even e-mailed their department and still didn't receive anything back.

We should be hearing tomorrow, I hope. Crossing my fingers! Anyone have any info on the interview? I know it's 3 hours and that it is done in small groups of applicants.

Just got my invite a few minutes ago via email! 🙂🙂🙂 So psyched!

Congrats to you! Unfortunately, I didn't get one 🙁 I think it is time to reevaluate my plans...

Good luck!!

I was denied by UNM 🙁 Not giving up hope though!

I'm sorry to hear that! I know that this year they were really emphasizing accepting in-state applicants. It's too bad they don't have the $ to expand the program more. There's such a shortage of OT's here as it is...

I knew that my chance would be slim as I am out of state, so I didn't get my hopes up too much. I was hoping to be an NM transplant since I really love it there, but I guess I will just have to continue to visit for vacation! 🙂

Got my interview invite yesterday 🙂
I'm out-of-state. Flights from Seattle are so costly, but I'm going!

@Taylor,

Maybe you can move here for a year to establish your residency and work at one of the hospitals or something in the mean time? Just a thought. Then you'd get a chance to get out and enjoy the mountains before you get down to work. 🙂

Flights are costly from DFW too. What is your gpa? If you don't mind me asking...

I've thought about it! I was trying to move out there earlier this year, but after my b/f called around to some contractors we figured it probably wasn't the best time. His industry seems to be hurting right now, according to companies there at least. I just landed a good job here, so I'm going to ride it out until next year and apply again locally. Try and try again. This was my second year applying, so if I don't get accepted next year I guess I will go into a different profession. OT is all I really want to do, but it is so disheartening when I have been trying for so long...🙁

I just got word that a fellow applicant was waitlisted. I haven't heard anything yet. Anyone else?

What Texas schools have you applied to?

Overall 3.6
Pre-reqs 3.4
I guess I'm just a crappy writer or my OT hours are too little. I have an 3.8-something overall and a 3.7 something prereqs and I couldn't even get an interview. 🙁

I also did not get in, unfortunately. 🙁 This is my first year applying, so I will be spending the next year racking up more hours in different areas of OT and taking some prereqs for Colorado State so as not to put all my eggs in one basket. Rejection sure is tough, though!

Have you taken a technical writing course? I know UNM is strongly recommending it now and some schools are requiring it.

I haven't taken a technical writing course..

Did you try school's out of state? I would definently try other schools if you didn't get into UNM. Cal State Dominguez Hills takes apps in the fall for Spring semester start. Also, see about getting help with essay. Your experiences way a lot. One more thing, I believe you can call the program to see how you did in each requirement. That way you can work on the the things that were low the time before for next time. Overall though, I believe that God has a plan for each individual person and when one door closes another one opens, and vice versa!

I did not apply to any other schools this year but I will be applying to a few next year. I've heard that UNM is pretty good about giving feedback on applications. My strategy for the next application round is to get as many extra volunteer hours as I can. I also have a lead on a rehab tech job through my previous volunteer position. I know it's just getting more and more competitive each year but I think with some hard work, it's very possible to get into a good program.

Just wanted to let any UNM hopefuls know that I talked to Heidi about my application from this last cycle. I got a lot of really useful information that I'd like to share.

First, she told me my application was scored just three points lower than the 24th person that was accepted into the program. Arggh! Kind of frustrating but it does give me hope for getting in next year.

As for the scoring process, she said that they stick very closely to the rubric they've created, meaning that they score each part of your application with a number and don't really look beyond that number when they're done. Each part is scored on a 25 or 30 point scale. The specific parts, from what I could tell, were divided as follows:

- personal statement
- cumulative GPA
- last 60 credits GPA
- OT volunteer experience
- life experience
- interview
- writing sample (given at the interview)

I don't know that this is exactly how they break it down, that is just what I understood from our conversation about my application. She said each part is weighed pretty equally. She also gave me some good feedback on which parts of my application could use improvement, most of which was not too surprising.

She also mentioned they will not be accepting out-of-state applicants next year unless they have really close ties with New Mexico, such as having grown up there.

I hope this is helpful for those of you applying next year. I would recommend calling the admissions office - Heidi is very helpful and some of the information here isn't totally comprehensive.
