Figured I would make this to mirror the 27-29 MCAT interview thread.

In that thread, someone requested posters share their URM status too.

Quote the previous post, add your name, stats, URM status, ii's so far, and remove quote tags.

For me: 3.00BCPM, 3.14c, 33Q, URM. Applied to 24MD, rejected from 4, interview at 1 so far.

If this thread is even half as inspirational as the 27-29 MCAT thread, then it will be another gem on SDN. Good luck to you all!

Where did you get rejected from and where did you get an interview at?

Rejected from:
Tulane
Rosalind Franklin

I also withdrew pre-secondary submission from NYMC and EVMS because of some requirements they have that I can't fulfill and didn't know about until I read their secondary. So I didn't really get rejected, but I would if I bothered to send in the secondary.

Interview at Drexel.

What were the requirements that you didn't meet at those schools?

I finished UG in 2010 and all of my LORs are from either post-bacc professors, a physician I shadowed, or my employer. NYMC requires LORs from UG professors unless you graduated before 2010.

I don't remember what the EVMS requirement was.

Also, I got rejected from VCU. Forgot about them.

Edit: Oh, the EVMS requirement is no C- in pre-reqs. I got a C- in Orgo 2 lab and the community college near me doesn't even offer Orgo 2. The 4 year near me is about $1200 per credit and doesn't allow you to enroll in lab only. I'd have to take Orgo2 + lab and that's 4 credits. Not worth the money unless EVMS was a guaranteed acceptance.. which it isn't.

II at Loyola

Hey, just some advice to keep your thread afloat:

You may want to edit your original post with updates to II instead of adding a new post for every new II; it will help keep the thread free of clutter.

By the way, congrats on your interviews so far!

3.27sGPA, 3.3cGPA, 3.8 graduate, 37Q

4 iis, 3 rejections (two from major reaches, UCSF + Mayo, 1 from BU(wtf!?))

not urm

~560 hours shadowing (3MD, 2DO. Family, Rheum, Cardiology, Derm/Surgery, IM/EM)
~400 hours clinical volunteering (Peds, NICU. Current)
~240 hours research (no pub)
~100 hours non-clinical volunteering (PH in indigent community)
~50 hours leadership (clinical and non-clinical)
~30 hours volunteering in an urgent care clinical (current)
~18 months full-time clinical laboratory work experience (current)

Did you really do all that? The amount of hours seems..a bit high? Or maybe it's just me. (No need to lie btw, we aren't the interviewers lol)

Yes, I really did all that. I graduated college in 2010.

The shadowing is because I shadowed one guy (the Rheum) for an entire summer 40 hours per week. I thought that's what all pre-meds did at the time. Clinical volunteering was done throughout all 4 years of undergrad (well, 3.5 since I didn't start until late freshman year). Non-clinical started as a class requirement (25 hours over a semester) but I ended up doing more because it was fun. I trust the others are a bit more believable and don't need an explanation 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll do that!

for some reason i thought medPR had a 3.9+ and 36+

I wish 🙂

2.97 science (physics=super hard major) 3.1 cumulative

3.65 grad 3.9 post grad 34 MCAT

5 DO, 1 top-50 MD invite

Which MD is it?

3.27sGPA, 3.3cGPA, 3.8 graduate, 37Q

4 iis, 3 rejections (two from major reaches, UCSF + Mayo, 1 from BU(wtf!?))

not urm

Apparently BU gets 10k+ applications. Don't sweat it.

medpr, I also thought for some reason you had boss stats. Very nice to see someone near my GPA for a change. Although, kickass mcat for you . Didn't you apply/gain acceptance into some D.O. schools?

I applied to DO as well, but haven't gotten any acceptances. I've attended 1 interview so far and they told us 4-6 weeks for a decision. It's only been 2 weeks but I'm already dying to know.

MedPR I have a feeling you have some amazing EC's and rocked your essays.. you are getting more ii's at this point that people with higher stats. Congrats on the loyola ii. Hoping to have the same success as you.

Take what you read on this site with a grain of salt--although you can find a lot of great information on this site, remember if you don't have 4.0 40 you still got a shot:laugh:.

Disclaimer: Half URM/Half ORM, i checked both boxes on the AMCAS so it's though to say if i got the "URM advantage." I look more ORM and that definitely showed on the pictures you have to send in on secondaries.

Thanks I hope we can all get in somewhere!

Gratz on the interviews guys. However, you can't really compare URM to ORM in this case.

Admissions for URM are generally done separately and they compete for different seats. ORMs are held to higher standards. If you're URM and have sub 3.3 gpa (but not atrocious) with an okay mcat and you're a decent person, you have a great shot at getting interviews. Many of my URM friends have a ton more interviews at the moment than ORM friends with higher stats.

For ORMs it's a different story.

I have a 3.4 so I'm not sure if i count, but after reading all this neurotic SDN crap i thought i would be lucky to get one interview 😀 As of now i have 9 MD Interviews and couldn't be happier.

The URM advantage will definitely count in your case. As long as you have some URM in you then you're be considered URM for admissions.

Good job making this a urm vs orm thread.

medPR, haterz gon hate. you're rocking this app cycle. thats all there is to it.

Good job making this a urm vs orm thread.

Not trying to make this a URM vs ORM thread, bud. Nor am I a hater. I'm really happy for anyone who's a decent person and can get interviews and realize their dreams. However, it has to be said that URM vs ORM, especially when you're looking at lower GPAs, it simply cannot be ignored. It's a disclaimer that needs to be mentioned in low stat threads. 3.3 for ORM vs URM is an entirely different world.

i am a non-urm with a cgpa within this thread's range (i just don't want to state my exact stats to maintain anonymity but i have posted elsewhere my 29-31 mcat score) with 1 md ii so far. 2 rejections. I wasn't going to post anything about my ii but just wanted to throw it out there that it's possible for ORMs too.

edit: excuse all the typos

A few years ago, I applied with a GPA in that range - not URM, male, 29 < MCAT < 31. Ultimately submitted 4 DO and 2 MD secondaries. 5 IIs (2 MD, 3 DO). 1 DO pre-interview rejection.

My GPA was sort of weird though... in that (without going into exact detail)... It would have looked something like this:

Freshman year - 1.0 >>> my GPA
Freshman year 2, Sophomore year - Senior year 3.6< my GPA<3.9.

I retook maybe 2-3 classes because I started out in a different major and didn't go back, so my AACOMAS GPA was marginally different from my AMCAS GPA.

Where did you get accepted and where did you matriculate?

I think you're my twin.... (the way your GPA breaks down) I have a crazy cumulative/science split.

Bump? Any more interviews for 3.0-3.3gpas? I have a 3.39cgpa and a 3.28sgpa with a 32mcat. So far...no luck on iis.

I've gotten two more. Cincinnati and wright state.

Don't know if this counts, but I have a science gpa of 3.14 (cgpa is 3.46) and a 31 mcat. I've got one MD ii so far...

We should really do a "LizzyM score below 65 with interview invite" thread. Whenever I look through this thread or the "27-29 MCAT with II" thread, I end up mentally cutting out the folks with correspondingly high mcat scores or gpas.
