I have e-mailed Houston but have gotten no response as of yet. Has anyone been in contact with Houston and know if they have set up an alternate list yet.

I called yesterday, was told that a couple of letters went out, but I was not one of them, Something about there were a lot applicants this year. Not really sure how to take that comment. Also that april should be the month when everything is about done for UT houston. Didn't ask about the alternate list? now that I think about it I should have.

Talked to admissions today for UT Houston. There class is nearly full and the second round of letters went out. There are 90 applicants pending on the alternate list. So depending on where you fall the chances are slimmer or more likely. So, I guess I will be moving to Cleveland to go to Case and embracing a HUGE debt load. Oh well. I will miss it here in Houston. 🙁

Reading others post about having to leave, and go to schools they did not really want to go, is a downer.

bumpin this up to the top.

I talked to Celest at Houston today and she said that the class is almost full and if you have not already received an acceptance letter, the chances of getting one are very slim. She said that they had over 1000 applicants this year and last year they only had 750. She did say that they have about 100 people on their alternate list, but that they were not going through the list as much as usual. She also could not say where on the list the applicant is ranked.

Also, I recieved my rejection letter from San Antonio today.

I was under the impression that Texas dental schools did not send out rejection letters? I talked to a lot of my friend who are in dental school right now and none of them even mentioned a rejection letter. Does anybody know for sure?

My assumption of the rejection letters going out to students who did not interview. Otherwise those of you that did interview, you might not recieve a rejection letter for a long time.

Well, I've got some interesting news.

One of my friends just emailed me and let me know that they had "just found out" that they had been "accepted to San Antonio Dental School"...and that was yesturday March 2nd. 😱

I'm not sure what to make of this. What do you all think this means??

Just for clarification, I did not interview at San Antonio: the school from which I received my rejection letter.

I emailed Dr. Thomas and she said that the class is full and has been full for more than a month now. Your friend probably was at the top of the waitlist.

I might be able to help end your speculation. I accepted San Antonio in January and had to withdraw recently because my wife landed her dream gig as an assistant professor in another state. Thus, they had a spot open up and apparently your friend got in.

Where are you going to go then?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Are you just going to apply in 2006.

I found out too late to get an AADAAS application in so I will have to apply in 2006. We are moving to Omaha, NE which has two schools accessible, U of Nebraska (Lincoln) and Creighton. Hopefully I'll get accepted again next year at one of these schools. Given that she will be a U of NE system professor, I will get residency immediately which helps my chances at the Lincoln program. As Creighton is private, I guess my chances would be the same applying as TX resident (which is rough given the protection provided by the three TX schools).

It was a tough decision but my wife is a big reason I even went through with my plan for dental school (wonderfully supportive), so getting her shot after six years of a Ph.D. program trumped my starting a program. Both of the schools in Nebraska are very good and I will get a good education there. In addition, I am originally from WI, so it was a good move for us in terms of being driving distance from home and certainly much more affordable in terms of housing. Interestingly enough, Dr. Thomas from San Antonio told me that she went to Creighton and the Dean of San Antonio went to Lincoln, so she was very positive about the education I will get in NE.

I will say that despite losing my position, I am happy that giving up the chair gives somebody else an opportunity. I guess it is possible that they were accepted elsewhere and that this is just another acceptance, but if not, I am glad that they will get their chance after so much hard work.

Mad props to Bpenly!

Good luck, I know you'll make it in Nebraska.

Well... if we can keep it from rotting for the next 2.5 months, it'll be reborn.

Wait... 1.5 months... now that's sad but true. I've gone from anxiety about recieving letters to anxiety about sending them out!

Finally!

I received an acceptance letter from Houston today. What a relief!

For all of you still waiting, don't give up hope yet.

For anyone who ends up going to San Antonio...

There is a new aprtament complex opening up called Braodstone Colonnade. The complex is the nicest I've seen in the area and they have great move in specials. A good number of current medical students are moving out there next year icluding myself, so I thought I'd let you guys know about it. If you end up checking it out, tell them Neil from the medical school sent you. She'll hook you up with 4 weeks free prorated over a 12 month lease. If you end up filling out an application, put my namedown, Neil Shah in the referral section. I get a little kick back once you have lived there for a month... once I find out that you put me down as a referral, I'll slip a $50 check into your school mailbox. The complex is really worth checking out... they have a nice gym with multiple treadmills with individual LCD TVs and a indoor basketball court. They have a really nice sports lounge with a kitchen, a huge plasma TV, a nice pool with outdoor TVs, a outdoor poolside fireplace, a a lot of BBQ grills by the pool. The floor plans are big and the interiors are really modern(wooden floors, lofted ceilings, nice views). There information is as follows:

1bd/1bth 568sq ft $577
1bd/1bth 664sq ft $655
1bd/1bth 707sq ft $687
1bd/1bth 858sq ft $779

2bd/2bth 997sq ft $926
2bd/2bth 1099sq ft $995
2bd/2bth 1146sq ft $1045

3bd/3bth 1311sq ft $1350

The typical rent for a 1bd/1bth in the area is $475 to $900 depending on the quality. This complex is the nicest I've seen in the area and not nearly as expensive as the rest of the nicer places. That's why a bunch of med/dent students are moving there next year.

Melissa Garcia (or whoever is working there at the time)
Broadstone Colonnade
4330 Spectrum One
San Antonio, TX 78230
210-877-9926
210-877-9944 fax

Shoot me an email if you end up signing a lease and putting me down as a referral at [email protected]
I'll confirm it with Melissa and then once you've lived there for a month I'll hook you up with your $50.

See you guys at school soon...

Neil

I was hoping that this thread got bumped because someone else got accepted.

Has anyone else gotten an acceptance from one of the TX schools in the past month?

Hey! TMDSAS apps came out today. They leave a single blank for the SAT score. Do they want the comb. of your highest verbal + highest math, or the highest total score.... I remember some undergrad apps requesting the highest individual points... but then... we had to submit complete SAT transcripts... Deebosay:"shappnenTexasfolk?"

That's it. Try to collect as many teeth as you can from local dentists. (and if you find any good looking teeth with no cavities and straight roots let me know 😉 ) Try to relax this summer. When is orientation?

Don't worry i'll be relaxing a whole lot this summer. i think orientation is august 3-5th. where did you read that we had to collect teeth? or is this just a thing we're suppose to know about?

It should be in one of the letters. You'll use the teeth in operative and endo. Later on (if you haven't used them all up like I have) you'll use them for endo on the WREB.
