Hi!

So im a 27yr old IMG working in UK at the moment in a job that allows me to study for my Steps while improving my CV for the matching process. As im working and studying, i'm planning on taking Step 1 in Jan-Feb-March triad. I suffer from ADD and time management is a MAJOR problem for me. Also, as I dont take any meds(diet and exercise only), ti can all get a bit much at times. I was wondering if there are any other ADD docs out there going through similar issues and if they'd like to share their experiences. It'd help me a lot! Thanks.

Are you able to get through a block of UW without getting up or getting distracted?

I had this problem with Step 1 and still have it with Step 2 CK. Had to change my study habits and do shorter blocks or use Tutor mode.

One thing that works well for me is isolation, and removal of any clocks. No phone, no laptop. Just set a goal when you sit down to finish one/two chapters, take a break and then get through however many shortened blocks of UW.

I also don't use meds, just diet, exercise and sleep. On the real exam, adrenaline/stress of it will cause you to stay focused and you may need some Red Bulls towards the end.

No i havent managed to do a full block without getting distracted yet. I am currently on cardiac physiology and I do 10 question tutor mode for cardio physio questions. Sometimes I get through the 10 questions and review the questions later. Late nights are usually the best time for me focus-wise and coffee has always had a calming effect so that helps but it makes work in the mornings quite a challenge. Staying away from phones and laptops is fine but UWorld needs internet and when im on the tablet, halfway through the block I realize I forgot to check the Qualifying for F1 and oh, Wimbledon final's today, I wonder who won..........there goes an hour or two. At this rate, im not too sure i'd be able to sit still for even one hour, let alone 8!

The actual exam day is a different story. You'll be fine on that day in that controlled setting.

If you want to really see that in effect and what I'm talking about - take the Practice 150 at the prometric center. You'll see exactly what I mean.

Your biggest challenge during prep without a doubt will be attempting to simulate NBMEs and get an accurate correlation; and doing full blocks of UW in one sitting. For anyone with even the slightest ADD/ADHD, it will seem next to impossible. You'll just have to manage.

I haven't been able to simulate a single NBME to date the way you're supposed to (between Step 1 and 2, I've taken 6 of them so far). Sometimes it'll take me 2 days to take one.

Caffeine has a calming affect for me as well, and thats usually how I get a few hours of studying in each day. During that time, get your reading in as much as you can.
