Hey all,
I'm new to the forum, but I've been browsing and reading for quite some time. I am a Texas resident, but I know that it would not be wise to only apply to Texas schools as there are only three. I am considered minority status, black female and will be applying to dental school this cycle. Currently studying for the DAT, and hoping to do well. However, I have lots of issues with the PAT section. Although I'm trying to stay optimistic about that portion of the exam, how well would I have to do to still get in. I feel pretty good about the sciences, I just have to keep reviewing.
Current stats: Will be getting a B.A in Sociology and a minor in Chemistry and Africana Studies
Cum GPA: 3.989 Sci GPA: 4.0 (As of right now, I havent taken Biochem but will be taking that in the fall, I'm taken everything else required of me.)
I have shadowing hours at my school's dental clinic, and one of my letters of recommendation is from one of the dentists that works there.
I volunteered within the dental school's research programs..mostly clinical-talking to patients and having them donate saliva( it was fun 🙂 )
Also volunteered at my church over the last summer, I taught the 1st and 2nd graders.
I am academic co-chair of our pre-medical organization for minority students.
I was honored as a University Scholar (Top 2 percent of my class) this past semester.
Dean's List every Semester
Ok, so I'm trying to stay as humble as possible, because I am really nervous about the DAT. Especially the PAT section..but I'll keep trying my best.
To people who struggled with the PAT, what study methods did you use to get better. I've slowly started working on CDP and trying to scrutinize and examine what I did wrong, on each question. Any helpful hints? To the experienced dental students and applicants out there, what scores do you think I would need on the DAT to not sabotage my chances? Of course I aim to do my best, but even if I had a bad day and got straight 18's, would I still be ok?
I'm also looking at joint DMD/MPH programs, is anyone familiar with those? and what it takes to be accepted?
Also, anyone know about schools that are historically generous with scholarships? I know Texas tuition is so low, and a blessing as is, so I'm not too worried about money, but it would help me gauge which out of state schools to apply to.
Any advice about schools which would favor someone of my stats would be great..I don't want to waste my parent's money if I won't even get in 🙂
Thanks so much guys!!
