I will be considered a "non-traditional" applicant. This is my history:

After High School graduation, I was enrolled in a Technical College on a wait-list for Dental Hygiene, from which I transferred to UW-Madison and obtained B.S. in Biochemistry in 2007

GPA 3.0
(yes, I know this is low, I am taking classes at Northwestern School of Continuing Studies to raise this, I calculated I could raise it to a 3.2 with one year of getting A's)

I considered Dental school after graduating, but working throughout College, I wanted to make some money to reduce my credit card debit I manage to dramatically increase in college. (I had no help from my parents, just financial aid)

So I worked at a boy scout camp immediately after school. Not much money there but a fun experience.

Then I worked in Cardiovascular research at a contract research organization, in which I did small animal surgery and the isolated perfused heart (aka Langendorff) assay among other interesting techniques.

After there I went to work at Northwestern University in research, which is where I am now. Here I do a lot of things with my hands, including extracting bone marrow from mice legs. (This is a great opportunity as I get 80% tuition reduction because I am employee)

I have job shadowed both Dentist and Hygienist in the past, and plan on doing more this next year.

I also have volunteered a lot throughout my life, but the thing is, I never really documented any of it. (My mom is big into volunteering, my dad says if she made money doing it we would be rich, so she made me volunteer when I just a little kid and onward) I am volunteering now, this time with kids at a museum, so I feel comfortable with this part of my application.

I have played violin and piano my whole life, started taking violin lessons last year so I can audition to community orchestras. I also like to redesign thrifted clothes, so I sew a lot. There's numerous things I like to do with my hands, so I'll just stop there.

I am studying to take the D.A.T. in a couple months...

So, my question to you:
Is there anything I am over looking?
I feel that I will be a strong applicant besides my G.P.A. and I am feeling good about the D.A.T.

A bit more info:I am hoping I will get into UIC dental school since I already live in Chicago, but I will apply to other schools. I also did mammary cancer research while going to UW, I wasn't involved with the pre-dental society or other organizations since I didn't have much time since I worked full time and went to school full time. Also, I have all the required courses with a degree in Biochemistry.

This is my first post, so if this is a redundant thread, I am sorry. I have done a lot of research online and found that advice from others on this thread can be quite helpful. Thank you.

kill the DAT, apply to lot of schools.

Even though you're not below 3.0, you will find help in the "Under 3.0 Club" thread.

Stay off SDN for the next 3 months until you rock the DAT. Seriously.

You need to write a really good personal statement - this is key for a non-trad. Also, if you get a 22+ on the DAT, that will compensate for the low GPA. Focus more on a high DAT than on taking more classes.

Also, double check your science and BCP GPA. If these are lower than a 3.0 then you will need to bring that score up too.
