hey all, I'm a student at Saba University School of Medicine pursuing a dual MD/Hyperbaric Masters degree. I am finishing my 2nd year in 4 months and I have done very well throughout my time..GPA approx. 3.9 and I have a ton of extracurriculars. I am a resident of North Carolina and have a sister who attends UNC Dental School. Does anyone have any advice on how I would proceed to get a spot as a transfer? Any information on any other schools that would be good/easier to transfer to would be helpful. I'd appreciate it

Wouldn't the appropriate first step be to contact the school?

I would think that transferring from the carribean to a US allo program doesn't happen all that often. I've never come across anyone who did this, and would think if it was doable far more carribean students would try to make the jump. However, as the prior poster indicated, the best resource for transfer possibilities would be the target school to which you want to transfer.

It is very difficult to transfer into Allo programs (even from Allo programs in the US). My understanding is that most of the students who successfully transfer are able to do so because of compelling family reasons (i.e., their spouse is a year or two ahead of them and matched for residency at another program).

Law2Doc is right, you should contact the schools directly and see what they say. Good luck!

To the OP....are your trying to transfer to UNC medical school or to dental school with your sister?

I do know of someone who transferred from one of the Caribbean med schools to a pretty decent mainland school but he did so after first year and was literally #1 in his class. He ended up doing well and matching into ENT. I know of a few people who transferred from one US allopathic school to another, but it was very difficult. She was in the top 3 in her class at a top tier medical school and was trying to transfer to a lower tier school to be near her fiance, and it was extremely difficult for her to get in--took a full year and countless phone calls on her behalf from several faculty and adminstration members. I also know of 2 osteopathic students who transferred to allopathic school, but in one instance they made her repeat her M3 year.

My point is that it can happen but is extremely and often prohibitively difficult, will require a huge effort on your part and generally will only happen if you are in the TOP of your class at Saba. Bear in mind also that a medical school will only consider transfers if there is room in the class for which you are trying to transfer into. Students within their own institution take time off, fail a year, or need to repeat a year for whatever reason and will be given priority over you. For this reason you may not ever have a chance no matter how stellar your application is.

Congrats on doing well so far! I know someone who did a transfer into 3rd year, but they had to take USMLE Step 1 and basically kill it. Plan for that, and then apply... any school you go to will want to see those scores, since a "3.9" doesn't mean much if there's no standard benchmark like the USMLE.

I know Wake Forest will probably have several (~5) openings after about April. According to the website:
"Admission to advanced standing by transfer may be granted to a limited number of students if space is available. Those seeking transfer must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an LCME-accredited medical school. Inquiries should be forwarded to the Office of Medical Student Admissions.

Inquiries should include reasons for wanting to transfer, a brief description of the medical school career so far, and the class into which transfer is being sought. Upon receipt of valid inquiries, either the transfer application or notification as to space availability will be sent.

The transfer application requires a dean's letter, two letters of evaluation from medical school faculty, a curriculum/course description from the current medical school, a complete transcript, and a nonrefundable application processing fee of $55.00. After evaluation of the transfer application, an interview may be required. The deadline for transfer applications is February 1. "
Better hurry up.

...Those seeking transfer must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an LCME-accredited medical school.

From a casual glance at their website, Saba Uinversity SOM is _not_ an LCME-accredited school. That would pretty well limit accessions via that route. But...

Your school of choice might have a different procedure for international schools, since they aren't under LCME. Might be worth a phone call to the school.

About 10 people transferred out of my school into US schools at the end of first year, and typically about the same number, or sometimes more, transfer out after the second year. But SGU is very well known and well accredited, so it may be easier to do it from here than from another Caribbean school.

I know the key is contacting the US school itself and seeing if they accept transfers. They will tell you if spots are open and what steps you need to take. I know from my friends who transferred that it can be a major hassle; just realize it means doing the whole med school application process again. But I've been very happy with my education at SGU so I never really considered it.

Good luck!

Hi, Adam82,
I am a first semester student at Saba, also from NC. I see that this thread has been inactive for some time now but I though it might be worth a shot to ask how things have worked out for you? I am curious to know if you attempted to transfer into UNC Med or another Med school in NC? How was your time at Saba and during rotations? Any info/advice would be appreciated! Best of luck.
