Any advice on setting up electives?

Anyone have any advice in general about setting up electives in NA? I'm likely heading back to Ontario for xmas so may want to do my elective there. Should I contact specialists I would want to observe or just go through the hosp admin? I've heard some people have probs getting turned down by admin people or not much help.
