Hi all, here is a little background of me: I used to be premed but realized after much thought and talking to doctors by volunteering that I do not want to pursue this career anymore due to many reasons such as lifestyle. After some suggestions to look into pharm and doing a little research on my own, I realized that this is what I really want according to my lifelong goals.

I got my BS in Bio with an approximate 3.0 GPA. Currently taking some pre reqs courses at a community college and I plan on finishing the rest there. I'm also doing some volunteer work and a little research. I began prepping for the PCATs already and plan to take it this June. I definitely want to get into Pharm School the next fall.

All I am asking right now is for any feedback or suggestions to help me get into Pharm School (since I know that it is very competitive). Thanks in advance.

finish your pre-req. with a bang, so you can bring up your gpa, and show the interviewers that "upward trend" in your stats. Other than what you plan on doing, just follow through on what you stated you were going to do, and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the feedback!

Also I forgot to mention that I am a little concerned about finishing up my pre-reqs at a community college. I know this has been talked about many times before that it doesn't matter as long as you do good but still, it concerns me. However, I will definitely finish with a bang! 🙂

I never graduated college, dropped out. Took 8 years to go back. Did all my pre-req. at a JC/CC, and I got into pharmacy school on my first try. So as long as you do well finishing up your pre-req you should be ok.

Is your volunteer work pharmacy related? Adcoms like to see you in the field of pharmacy so they know that's really your passion and you're aware of what you're really getting into.

Good luck! 🙂

Unfortunately not. It's in the ER at a hospital. I tried asking a pharmacy position but they weren't taking any volunteers.

hi collegegrad,

Just try harder, collegegrad! 🙂 I'm in the same situation as yours. I got a BS in biology, was a premed and then changed to prepharm. I'm planning to take the PCAT this August, but I'm so nervous!!! I heard in order to be "competitive" you have to get at least in the 80th percentile. :scared: I am sooo worry ...

I've looked at all of the schools' websites and I am not too sure about their "admitted ratio". For instance, the admitted ratio for University of Colorado- school of pharm is 13.7:1. Does this mean that out of 14 students, they only accept 1?

Yeah, I'm worried too! I'm currently studying for the PCATs. I am glad I am not the only one with this situation. And yeah, schools are pretty competitive, you just need to apply to various places not just one to have chance of getting into a school. Good luck.

Well at least you do have volunteer hours and hospital experience. And you're making an effort to get pharmacy experience, so that's good. I think the adcoms will definitely take that into consideration. They seem to always appreciate volunteer work. Shows that you give back to the community and they like that.

Yes, volunteer work is highly favored. During my interview, they were really interested in what extracurricular activities I was involved in. It shows that you're not just a study nerd.

Also, don't make your personal statement a longer version of your original post. My first draft looked like that - just a boring recount of why I decided on pharmacy. (Not that your post was boring 🙂).

Hi CollegeGrad, you might look into shadowing -- even though the pharmacy isn't looking for volunteers, they may be willing to help you out with shadowing if you're already volunteering at the hospital. Or you could try a retail pharmacy... just a thought 🙂

Good luck!
