Hi all,

I’m Canadian (not a dual citizen) and I’m going to a US public med school this summer. I would really appreciate it if you guys don’t mind helping me on these questions:

1. I’m assuming that all research are going to be volunteer type. However, in regards to the 1st year summer, is there any chance for a Canadian to secure a funded/paid research position in a public American school? What is the best strategy to secure a summer research position as a Canadian?

2. I’m also thinking about applying for greencard in the future. Has anyone here had any success in getting the US greencard, and if so, what’s the process like? What’s the pros and cons of having a dual-citizenship (eg. tax)?

Thank you very much in advance.

I first posted this on the premed section, but was told to post here instead.

F1 visa has work hour restrictions. During summers breaks I think it's 40hrs/week on campus. Whether that is your campus or any other campus, you'd have to look into again. Your most likely method of getting a green card will be through an H1B-sponsoring residency.

You won't pay Canadian taxes on American income if your primary residence is America, but this should be the last thing on your mind right now. Getting a green card is no easy feat. I would definitely back things up by taking Canadian boards so you are eligible for residency up there.

One of my Canadian attendings had to take her Canadian boards when she stated considering going back... not a fun time when you're 6 years out of residency.
