I am new to SDN, and i have been noticing that a lot of people here have high DAT scores (23,24 etc). This freaks me out because I have 18/17, but the average DAT for most schools is a 19/20 with a 3.4 or 3.5. Anyways, has anyone one here been interviewed with 17 or 18's?

sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. it's all random. good luck anyways. remember that averages are just averages, but usually the people on the lower end of the average have something else that is not average about them.

Yes I did, to several

Just remember, if the school average is 20 then for every 24 that shows up there is a 16, or two 18s, or four 19s, or a 17 and a 19... you get my point 😛

if you read the columbia thread, the guy got a 13 on the PAT...and he got an interview.

gonna be hard with a 17, no doubt about that.

YOU NEED TO TAKE IT OVER.

one dude got a 14 on QR and got an interview at Harvard. Not sure it's a joke or not. An average DAT can be balanced out with a high gpa at a respectable university.
EDIT: 18 seems to be the minimum for competitiveness....
However, let's break this down. This is my opinion: if a person got a 20 on this DAT by getting a 26 on RC, 16 on OC, 17 on BIO, and 20 on Chem...or so ....is not as solid as a person getting 18s and 19s across the board and end up with an 18. Schools definitely look at that!

It is very possible, it just takes a jit load of patience. Hang in there dawg.

Good Luck

i'm thinkin you guys might be right...i got an 18/19/22 and have somehow snagged 5 interviews already...still not sure how that happened...and still dont know if that means i'll get in...but it is possible to get some love w/ those stats

man you're getting alot of love....i'm jeolous 😀 😛

yes, I got 3, and I am very happy and greatful for those three 😀

I used to think that it was enough but I am not to sure about it anymore. If you have 18/17 I feel that you may need to know somebody or get extremely lucky. Just an opinion here. Retake the DAT if you can b/c it's only getting harder to get in each year.

17=no/maybe
18=yes with 3.6+....one of the school i interviewed....their DAT ave is 18/18/17 but their ave GPA is 3.6cum 3.5 science. These are the stats for last year...most recent. Just a thought!

Do you really think that if you have an 18 that you need at least a 3.6 to get in? I have an 18/19/22 and have a sub 3.5 cum and sub 3.4 BCP and i've still gotten 5 interviews.....that worries me...i'd hate to think i went to all these for nothing haha

Depends what your EC's are!! If you have an AA17 with a unique background then you have a chance..considering gpa is higher than 3.0. Mine is 3.2 with AA17 and I have 6 interviews. I have a unique background and tons of EC's and can explain why my GPA is low. It's not always about DAT/grades...it's about who you are overall. If you're weak in one side make sure your strong on the other...so it can balance you out. And another thing is....apply EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1😴

I got in with a worse score then that

I have a 17 with 3 interviews.

Yes im positive that it is possible 😉

I know people dont want to hear this but......if you are a minority then your chances of gettin in are much higher. If you are white...i dont think you are goin anywhere with a 17 at this stage in the game.

Awww...🙁 ....

I would add the asians as well

18AA
3.8 cumulative
3.9 science
4 interviews

It's not just a numbers game. They look at the whole package. I cannot wait until December 1st! I hope it all works out!

I'm not a minority or asian; however, I am 30 years old with an extensive dental background.

Then kudos to you. Congratulations on your interviews.

I just needed to bring back this thread b/c i'm seeing more and more people becoming concerned with having an 18 on the DAT and feeling like they are royally screwed....this is for my fellow 18'ers!!!! just b/c we dont have the best score in the world does not mean we are not as capable as anyone else...its just much harder to show that we are. Here's to hoping ADCOMS feel the same way...good luck to all of you

Preach on bro, Preach on 🙂

It is possible IF you can show your uniqueness in other areas. Its a longer ladder to climb, but the rewards are even THAT MUCH SWEETER because with hardwork, almost anything is possible.

Do you mind telling me what your GPA is? I am non-traditional, with an extensive work background, but it is not in dental.....

when I said add the asians as well...i mean Asians don't get any special treatment like other minorities...Fair or not ...that's just how it goes.

Oh. I see what your saying now. I wonder if I have an edge due to my age. Being older definitely makes you stand out at an interview (not necessarily in a good way), but if they are looking for a diverse class, it may help.

My GPA is a 3.5. At an interview, I was told by an adcom that my GPA and DAT are slightly below average for their school, but I had the whole package they were looking for. I have 8 years experience as a dental hygienist and I held a volunteer RDH position with the Red Cross in another country for a year. I definitely think it is important to get the best grades and scores you can get, but if you are already finished with your prereqs., I would think it would be important to diversify yourself within the field of dentistry if you can. I have worked in periodontics, pediatrics and for the military. I also spent four months as a surgical assistant. I think the adcoms want to see that you are passionate about the profession of dentistry. If you can show it in your essay/writing style and then back it up at the interview, I think this is a very important part of the process.

Yeah, but Im sure you gpas are like 3.7's and your undergrad is in something like bioengineering.

DO NOT retake the DAT unless you're trying to get into Harvard or somewhere prestigious. Also long as you have a decent gpa and good ECs, you'll be fine.

Oh believe me, I wish it was...my cum GPA is sub 3.5 and my sGPA is sub 3.4..and I majored in biology. The only thing i can think of is...i had a TERRIBLE semester early sophomre year, and since then...my GPA took off...getting 3.5's-3.9 each semester to bring it way back up..so i'm thinking they were impressed with the improvement..maybe my LOR's were good too..i really dont know

well, what's your GPA? 18/17 is not that bad. if you maximize the number of schools you're applying to and choose schools wisely, then you should get in somewhere. now that i am a first year, i must tell you that in the long run, your DATs hardly mean anything. some people get in with very high DATs and do poorly or average in dental school while some others have average DAT scores but do very well.....

Hey guys, great DAT scores and a good GPA don't always ensure that you'll get an interview. I have AA 24 - TS 25 - PA 21, and a sPGA 3.5, cGPA 3.6.... AND NO INTERVIEWS!! :scared:

I've also heard that schools don't look at all DAT scores, just some key scores. Some rely heavily on RC, UOP likes PAT, and I heard that Loma Linda likes o-chem.

The average DAT is around an 18 or so. It's a bell curve, right? That means that more people got 18's than 19's and more got 19's than 20's (for AA).

That said, I think you can still get in with an 18, it's just that the pool of applicants with an AA 18 is much larger, therefore schools have a broader choice of applicants so your chances of being one of them is more slim.

Something to consider.

I like this thread, it makes me feel good about my 18AA🙂

I agree...it makes me think that instead of being in the rejection pile...i'll at least have a shot at the waitlist haha...damn QR..that section should be abolished, esp. cuz math is not required at all schools...i would have preferred a physics section personally

Yeah, I TOO would rather a physics section like the MCAT, rather than QR

dont worry. you have a chance depending on when you applied.

OK so what is the likelihood that someone w/ an 18 AA gets accepted on Dec 1st? I mean i know these days an 18 isn't anywhere near as good as it used to be...but are those first couple of days basically reserved for those people w/ the 20+ and the 3.5+ gpa? I know its paranoia..but i just have this feeling that once Dec 1st rolls around us 18ers are going to get the dreaded rejections or at BEST...waitlisted, which these days is not a very good sign.

Don't listen to all these discouraging people. 18 on DAT is better that the average DAT which is 17. (Not 20) A 20 AA is 86 percentile. It's not all about the DAT. I got a 13 on the QR and did get an interview at Harvard (maybe Im the one you are talking about). The rest of my scores were good though. Ironically I am an engineer with 8 years of medical product design experience. Maybe they figured that an engineer who screwed up the math must of just messed up. They asked me about that stupid score though.
Just remember none of these people know any more about the admissions process than you do. They just make stuff up, from their own insecurities.
