I may be panic but I do have a good reason to be panic. I think seriously I may need to apply to a couple counseling programs. I am looking for some relatively good ones. My interests involve schizophrenia, PTSD, and suicide/self-injury, multicultural studies etc. If you know of any programs with later deadlines, such as January or later, and with these interests, please kindly let me know. Please do let me know if you just know their deadlines and I will look up their programs by myself.

I am thinking that instead of getting a couple clinical programs for "safety" schools, maybe I should apply to a couple decent counseling programs instead. It may be a little late for 15th deadlines but I will see. I just want to have some information to get a better idea.

Thanks. And not easy trying to calm down every day. :scared:😱

Counseling Psychology programs aren't a "back-up" to Clinical programs; although counseling programs tend to receive fewer applications, they also tend to accept fewer applicants, and acceptance rates are similar. Moreover, there are differences in the philosophy and curriculum of the two types of programs. Your interests sound very clinical, IMHO, although there may be professors in counseling departments working on those concerns, especially as they relate to multicultural populations. Most of the "relatively good" counseling programs had deadlines in December, though, unless your definition is different than mine. 🙂

It's hard to control the panic at this point in the process, but I'm sure that you'll be fine. Many schools haven't sent interview invites yet, and some of those who have haven't completed their process. And even if you or I or anyone else don't get an offer of admission this year, it will still be fine - just a different fine that we're hoping for! Good luck.

I second this. I was initially drawn to clinical programs, but ended up searching both counseling and clinical while applying and discovered that the vast majority of POIs whose research most closely related to my interests were in the counseling psych programs. I also noticed that the gap in selectivity between counseling and clinical programs has been narrowing rapidly over the past few years. Most of the counseling programs I applied to had deadlines between November 1 and December 15 and all had acceptance rates between 2% and 6%. Even with good GRE scores and 3 years of research experience, I'm still worried about getting in somewhere because there are so many well-qualified applicants.

Good luck to all of us who are applying this year! :xf:

I applied to a couple of counseling programs this year and just realized that I never even considered whether the programs I was applying to were "relatively good". I didn't consider their reputation at all. Woops. Where can I find this information out?

I looked at this ranking of couns. psych programs based on department research productivity:
http://www.socialpsychology.org/gcounsel.htm

Also this list of studies recommended by APA division 17
http://www.div17.org/students_rankings.html

Since most of the info out there is really outdated though (and some of the supposedly recent 'counseling psych' rankings on other sites actually combine counseling psych with clinical psych programs) , I took this info with a grain of salt and made decisions based on each program's recent internship match rates, student funding, and the quantity/quality of publications and grants for my specific POIs.
Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks for this info, StrangeVision! I'll be sure to check out those sites and take the info with a grain of salt. 🙂
