Hi guys, I could really use some advice ASAP.....
I am seriously thinking about applying this admissions cycle; I just have to scramble to get my application completely together. A question I haven't found the answer to is the following: if I were to apply but not get accepted this year, would this hurt me in applying for the following year? In other words, let's say that I didn't get in anywhere for matriculation in fall 2007; what would schools think about my rejections when I would apply for the following year (for matriculation in fall 2008)?

Thanks sooooooo much for the help!!!

if you reapply immediately the next cycle you MUST...(i repeat)you MUST reapply with an improved resume. you BETTER NOT reapply with the same application you had the first cycle. ad coms all want to know..."well ya didn't get in the first time. what makes you think we should take you the second time around? what about you changed or improved?" in fact, ANYTIME you reapply you better make damn sure that you application is better than the previous time you applied because obviously the it wasnt good enough before. if the mousetrap IS indeed broke....you better fix it.

schools don't care about the previous rejections per se...they care about whether you improved your application or not. and if you didn't...you don't the greatest of chances of getting in the second time around.

i'd like to think i know a thing or two about reapplying during consecutive cycles...because thats what i did. i went from 2 interviews the first year to 13 interviews the next(interviews ranged from stanford to pitt to dartmouth to new york med).

13 interviews--wow!! if you don't mind, what did you do to improve your application? i applied last cycle with no acceptances...i had a very low science gpa...all i have done since is take graduate level science courses and did very well in them...im just wondering if this is enough, or if you think there needs to be something more drastic?

In the words of Jack Black, what is the secret of your powers?

that's not entirely true.

if you have stellar apps (mcat, gpa, LORs, ECs) and you applied late (late october), it's very likely that you will get rejected just because spots for interviews have already been taken by the time adcoms get to reading your application.

some people just resubmit their old application right at the beginning of the season and get a ton of interviews. the point is, it all depends on the situation how you should handle a reapplication. if you really feel that there's not much more that you can do besides a lil more volunteering, or some experience abroad or in research, don't stress.

If at all possible, you only want to go through the application process once. It's a lot of time, energy, and $$. So you want your app to be the best it can be the first time you submit. That said, it's still June. You have time to get your stuff together and get it in for this cycle. Good luck!

Depending on why they rejected you, you may need to show improvement for them to accept you the second time. For example, if you applied late and didn't get in because of that, then you may have been qualified to get in had you sent in an earlier app. But if you did everything 'right'---i.e you got your app in on time, didn't flub up your interviews, then reapplying may require you to show improvement b/c the original rejection was based on a weaker application. The best thing to do is to ask why you were rejected. Was it your stats? ECs? LORs? Then try to fix that and amend it or show improvement in the weak area. However, the admissions game is random enough that many schools will reject you for no discernible reason, and reapplying by itself may get you in. Just be sure you know if it was random chance that kept you out of certain schools or something that could be improved upon.
