I know some people start having kids while there in the med school? Are there any pharmacy expecting moms or anyone who had babies before finishing school? If so, I would like to hear their stories about handling both the family and the school. How flexible is your school about taking leave for that matter?

I'll tell you my story..
I was not planning to have a baby before I graduate, but things happened and I had a baby in my 3rd year (last semester). I gave birth in the middle of the semester and I had to go back to school after 1 week (oh yeah, and I had my son c-section) the school was very supportive, but they expected me to make up any missed session or lab, so I gathered my strength and came back to school 1 week after I gave birth (other wise I will be stuck with loads of make ups).

I am telling you it was not easy, Thanks God, I have a supportive husband and family. my mother-in-law is helping me with the baby, but I am telling you if my mother in law did not exist I would have quit from day one. I know when I leave my son cranky or sick, that a family member will take good care of him compared to a day-care or a baby sitter.

I personaly, do not advice anyone to have a baby during pharmacy school, unless you want to time it to give birth after you graduate!

I already have one child. If I have another child during pharmacy school I will time the conception/birth so the birth is during the summer. I had complications from the C-Section delivery of my first child and needed in-home nursing care for 11 weeks after her birth. I couldn't afford to let that happen during the school year.

PS - not relevant but interesting - the tab for her delivery, her care, and my care topped $50,000 after all was said and done. Thank heavens for insurance.

I had my son during my last semester in Undergrad. I waddled to summer classes right before the Aug. due date and still tried in the the fall to go to classes. But I finally faced the facts and took the semester off. Now, my baby is my motivation and a strong support system has most definately helped me through. I switched him to two different daycares before my mom decided to quit her job and take care of him for me. I've been truly blessed. As long as you have someone reliable, that you can trust to look after your child, you schedule times to study and have a strong support system, I promise that you can do it.

Awww, why would you give up that time with your baby to spend time studying, studying, studying? Have a baby when you can enjoy it 🙂

Thanks guys for your responses. Do you guys have time to have fun and be with your family while you are in the pharmacy school? I assume that the pharmacy school is much easier compared to med school. Am I right? How hard it is compared to the undergrad? How does the schedule at the pharmacy school work? 😕

I don't know why you keep comparing pharmacy school to med school...And what make you tell the pharmacy school is "much" easier that med school...only somebody that has a pharmD and a MD can tell you how this went for him..but does not mean that one is easier than another...I have friends in med school..and all of us have our " high and low" of stress in the semester, but i refuse to see it as one being less challenging that another..some people will tell you that pharmacy was a joke to them..was so easy..some will tell you that med school was a smooth sailing...so comparison dont always help..did you end up to pharmacy school because you were deny for med school? no matter the school...you get back what you put in...that's my moto...

In Undergrad most of my exams were essay questions ....so I had a different way to study back then. In pharmacy school most of them so far are multiple choice..so I had to adapt...My grades are better in pharm school that they were in my undergrad...but i still feel like i gave the same effort in both..the time, the stress before exam..it all still there for me....

If you go to the med forum..you will find people perfectly happy in school and having family time..thanks to a devoted spouse or family member in general ..same for pharm school...

I had my baby at my last semester of prepharmay classes..thanks to my husband and my sister ..I am happy in school and at home..I manage to have good grades ( hey i do not make all A..just i have learn to appreciate myself and be happy with a B knowing that i have done my best..and if a C shows up in this long road to come..well... it won't kill me) and quality time with my family..my secret...be constant in my study habits...i am not a good last minute studying thing..so i study when i can even when the exam is far.you know no major thing but just reading thru my notes from time to time..that reduce my level of stress when exam time come. I do not spend as much time with them as i would like to or they would like to..but again i have learn to appreciate the time i can give them..and then have learn to appreciate when mommy get her head out of her books...so I am not saying that it is all pink..just it is not that bad in general...oh..add to this a job as an intern 12-15 hours a week.

My schedule varies from a semester to another....i am a p-1 and this semester was very busy..full of exams..we will have in total 20 exams plus a fail or pass course...

I think that all depend on you own level of self estime...If you were a A student..when become a B student..you have to learn to be proud of yourself knowning that you have a family that no matter how busy you are still expect a piece of you from time to time.

here is an equation that can help you:

A= Great, dean list, honors...Fantastic!!
B+husband+baby= A+, dream come true in personal and professional life...
have fun = be with the family...( yep..no more solo night out...and i don't miss them)

Look I won't erase what i wrote up there at the begining to show u my first reaction to you post..I was a little bite bitter. and frustrated about stereotype that pharmacy is easy..
.but as I was writting..I realize how this all school with baby can be confusing..I have been there....and just want to help..

only you can know how bad you want things to happen...some will say go for it..some will say don't even think about it...but it is your decision..our stories are not the thermometer to use to juge your chances of success in this intense life to be parent and student...
