Any fellow-Louisianians out there?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a greenie myself. There are quite a few other louisianians around here.

I have been living in Louisiana since the storm.

I have been getting conflicting answers as to whether LSU - NO takes out of state applicants. Does anyone know where I could find an definative answer on this?

Also, what does it take to get Lousiana residency?

Right now, NO isn't taking many students at all. I've heard a lot of rumors that they'll take about 50 students this year, if they're able to get up and running that soon. The number of applicants here in Shreveport more than doubled. That's why I didn't make it off the waitlist this year.

As far as residency goes, I don't know. I think you have to have a permanent address here for a certain amount of time, and maybe an account with a utilities company (i.e., electric, gas bill, etc...) to prove that you're a resident. You may contact someone in the state gov't. Maybe a local senator? LSU doesn't take many out of state students... usually just a small handful, if any at all, since it is a state-funded school. Tulane is a different story since it's private.

Hope all goes well for you.

I am a LaTech-man here. Louisiana born and raised 🙂. I attended LSMSA, which most Louisiana people know about (A residential high school). How is LSU treating you for pre-med?

Well, I actually finished all my pre-preqs in 2003... got my history degree from LSU-Shreveport in Dec. 2002... treated me pretty well. And as for the med school here, I think my chances are great (after all, I have made it to the wait list before... so the ad comm must think I'm a decent person 🙂 ). I'm still plugging away. the dean of admissions has been very encouraging and wants me to reapply. All of the signs have been positive.

What about you? How is life over at Tech? I had a couple of friends who went there in the late 90s, and it's my mom's alma mater.

Btw, is LSMSA the one in Natchitoches? I'm a Caddo Magnet grad, c/o '97.

Yeah, The one in Natchitoches. Tech is good, what little of it I have seen so far. I just graduated high school, and I've taken a few summer classes at tech.. haha. I've actually got a lot of questions for my future medical aspirations, but I'm waiting for that 24 hour no-thread ban to end. Do you have a messenger, preferably AIM?

Another thing... How is LSU-Shreveport as far as medical schools are concerned? Is it really low, or is it middle-decent?

The school in Shreveport is a great one. You can get an excellent education here. There are a lot of great specialists in many fields. I've been working at the ER for two years, so I've seen a lot of it first hand.

I'd be happy to answer any questions. I tried to send you a private msg, but it wouldn't let me. So, here's my yahoo ID: kimbows2000 and my aol ID: Kimbo M W. Whichever you want to send it to. I'll be online for quite a while tonight. Or if you want to send an email, it's [email protected]

Just wondering? I'm a Louisiana girl. Go LSU (or any other school on Earth that will accept me)! 🙂

I'm from Ruston, Louisana and am a graduate of Louisiana Tech and LSU-Shreveport School of Medicine.

Actually, we'll have around 200 for the 2006 entering class. 😀 And they're in the process of moving from BR to NO presently. Rumors are just that...rumors. (And there were some rather nasty ones out there about LSU-NO's "health" by those who should know better--very disappointing!)

The LSUs are state schools, so they take residents, unless you are an MD-PhD applicant or the child of an alum. When in doubt, consult the admissions office.

I had no idea. Last week the chair of the ad comm here said that they wouldn't be opening at full capacity this year. That was what he said they heard from the ad comm in NO. So I have no idea what's going on.

Wow. I am an incoming L1 and did Camp Tiger w/ LSU-NO this past week, and around 200 was the figure that the Assoc. Dean of Student Affairs (hope I'm getting his title right!) gave us. It included regular applicants, rural scholars, MD-PhDs. We had over 40 incoming L1s at the camp. We had a Q and A one evening and there was nothing in those conversations that would make me hesitate for a second about attending LSU-NO. And the rising L2 class was about the nicest, friendliest, most generous, cohesive group of people I have ever encountered. I was blown away!

Apparently, LSU-S was spreading rumors and misinformation about LSU-NO at their interviews and were called on it. I hope that's not still the case. The only thing that maybe he was referring to is that the hospitals are not fully open, so clinical rotations are spread out among the regional LSU/Charity hospitals (BR, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, etc.) more so than in the past.

Good luck with application process! It really is worth it when that letter finally arrives! :luck:

I have utility bills, tax returns, income statements from my current boss, leases, you name it to back up that I have been here slightly less then a year, but yeah, my perma residence is in Michigan, because my parents haven't moved in 30 years.

So I guess I stay a Michigander. 😉

LSU Sherveport contacted me last year and gave me a list of documents that I needed to have to make a case for residency.

I have many of those documents, but I was wondering if there is a minimum amount of time that I needed to be in the state.

I thought I would save myself a phone call... Now I guess I had better pick up the phone. 😉

Louisiana here. I'm starting in Shreveport in July. I'm really excited about it...

About the residency thing, as far as Shreveport goes, look on their admissions website, it has a plethora of information.

Hey guys, ULL student here. I've searched LSU's many websites thoroughly, but I still can't find the cost of tuition for either Shreveport or New Orleans. Can anyone help me out with a link? Thanks!

So, you were at Camp Tiger, so was I. But I'm a L2 by the way. Didn't know that shreve was seeding misinformation but what I am to do? I can't promised anything but from updates from the inside, the lecture halls will be revamped and renovated with wireless and such. Study rooms on the 3rd floor and 4th floor MDL rooms will be revamped as well. So for all of you L1, you will be enjoying new study areas. As far as 3rd and 4th years for you guys, it's gonna be alright, I don't know if they will have a new hospital up and running but at least LSU have about 5 or so to placed you guys.

As far as teaching goes, I thought that LSU-NO prepared me very well in all of the courses. You wouldn't find a better group of anatomy professors anywhere else. Anatomy: you will learn alot in a small amount of time.
HPD: good teachers especially the "west virginians persuader", good class overall.
Histo: Cool class, I love histo by the way. A little biased opinion from me.

Phys: well taught class except the renal/Gi block maybe a bit rushed
Biochem: attend the lectures, it is worth your while, very well taught. If you do attend biochem lectures you might be the only 20 or so students in it
Neuro: I don't get this class.

Go to www.medschool.lsuhsc.edu and click on prospective students, you will find financial stuff there. It only cost about 12,000 for tuition.

http://www.sh.lsuhsc.edu/registrar/2006-2007 LSUHSC at Shreveport SOM.pdf

There's a PDF breakdown for Shreveport, a breakdown of absolutely everything for fees and such.

$12,979 for the first year, which includes the computer.
$10,456 for the subsequent years.

Jeez I could have sworn I tore those websites apart. Oh well. I knew it was there somewhere! Thanks guys!

Those figures just motivate me more and more to work my butt off to get into a state school here. ULL might not be as well funded as LSU, but I am getting a full ride plus extra money in my pocket here. The thought of being able to graduate medical school with just that small ammount in debt... amazing and inspiring.

Hi all, Louisianian here, graduate of LSU and I also attended ULL. I'll probably be attending LSU-NO in the fall, assuming I don't get any more offers from schools I'm waitlisted at. Unfortunately I didn't make it to Camp Tiger because of a trip to Germnany but I'm looking forward to meeting all of you guys soon.
