would playing golf count as manual dexterity? I guess you wouldnt really know if you werent an avid golfer, but it does require strong wrists to work the ball and shape your shots, plus youve gotta have pretty steady hands and wrists to have a good short game. Anyways, its just a thought....any opinions?

nice try...but no, i don't think so

Haha I wish...I played in high school and still play alot...but I doubt it does. I know a few dentists that drink a ton of coffee and their hands shake like crazy, and they still do really nice work...whoever thought a dentist needed steady hands was nuts!

Since I'm up at an ungodly hour checking SDN before a 6:32 tee time...I'm a golfer, and, no. Try again.

The dentist who mentored me said things like cooking, flying, golf, etc. are all gross motor skills, despite the solid arguments you make above. Focus on things like art (painting, sculpting, jewelry), model-making, knitting, sewing, etc. You have time to try some of these activities, give one a shot.

It may even be a disadvatage because lots of golf will kill your lower back...something dentistry and golf have in common, but at least it can be a good point of discussion during the interview.

alright, well thanks for the input... i just thought i would give it a try, especially since i read on here that some people were actually putting video games down...

Only if you are golfing with the dean of the dental school you want to get into...hehe

I respectfully disagree with you Oprah 100%. Have you ever tried playing golf? The game requires proficient manual dexterity.

I devoted a paragraph of my essay to my passion for golf and how I believe it will make me a good dentist down the road. I didn't include it for the manual dexterity question..but don't discard it completely. I played on my university's team and worked very hard to get a low handicap..in my opinion it shows perserverance and the ability to maintain poise under pressure. Use it if you want..no worries!

I respectfully disagree with your respectfull disagreeance.

Yes I have played golf, I'm quite proficient.

No, the game does not require proficient manual dexterity.

I rest my case.

May I see your next witness?

Applying at Temple, good choice. Especially for Canucks. Take care and good luck. P.S. I would be very hesitant of using golf as a manual dexterity proficiancy. As for the team well hell yah! 👍

Being a non-golfer who has attempted to play golf (and I might add that I miserably failed)...I believe it takes some manual dexterity. However, just because one can't play golf doesn't mean a lack of manual dexterity 🙂

Nicely put. 'SOME' manual dexterity. I 100% agree with you.

Actually I average around an 82. But what the hell does golf have to do with pushing a hand piece. I'll tell you.................Not 1 thing.

I think they want you to tell them that you're a sculptor or a watch maker. We actually have a guy in our class who was a tattoo artist before he came here and he does great work. Dental Related, Sculpting, watch maker, tattooist...................Dental non-related, Bus driver, Golfer, Hockey Player.

I suppose you would say that you play Nintendo for 6 hours a day so that must count too.

Golf, baseball, tennis, squash, badminton...they all require hand-eye coordination. But I don't think having a 0 handicap or having the ability to hit a 90 mph 4-seamed fastball is directly related to an individual's proficiency with a hand-piece.

Since we are on the topic of golf, any of you <10 handicap guys have any simple tips to cure a slice? I feel like the grip is always loose around my hands during the downswing...

TRY THIS AJY:

if your right handed, and want to cure a slice,

assume your normal stance and with your right heel in place, rotate your right foot anti-clockwise as far as you can without it being too uncomfortable.
This will cure your slice

if you seem to be hooking the ball too much, try this:

Rotate your right foot clockwise, and you should see the difference

IF NONE OF THE ABOVE WORK (it should, because it's the most fundamental protocol for your kind of problem), then I suggest this for slicing the ball:

aim a little to the left before you hit the ball

if you hook, then aim right!

i don't suggest the latter method, because you will NEVER improve your game, try work through it! you'll get their TIGER! 😀

Thats like asking Helen Keller to do an endo procedure with no hands. You gotta see what your doing to comment. Get a $40 lesson. Or better yet stop thinking about the golf you're going to play as a dentist and work on getting those marks up so you can get in.
