Hello,

I am taking a class at my university on cancer biology and would like some cool reading on the topic. Since it is an intro class, it is covering all cancers and some basic biology and nothing too in-depth. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good book for additional info?

Thanks!

It's not really a biology book, but The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee (an oncologist) is really, really good. It's basically a history of cancer, focusing on the last couple hundred years. It won the Pulitzer Prize as well.

The best book out there is probably "The Biology Of Cancer", by Robert Allen Weinberg.
He was part of the group that first transformed fibroblasts into cancer cells, back in the 80s - evidence for a genetic basis of cancer.

Good lord that was an amazing book...

All books mentioned here are great! Maladies is more of a fun reading/biography than a science heavy book tho!

I used Kleinsmith's book in undergrad, and I even used it as a reference when we covered cancer last month. I haven't read the other books mentioned, but I really like Kleinsmith's text.

Probably the best textbook on cancer biology at the moment and one of my favorite books of all time. It's very well-written and does a great job explaining major concepts. If you're looking for information on specific types of cancers though, your best bet would be to find a recent review article through PubMed.

Can't say enough good things about this book.

In addition to the Emperor of All Maladies, Robert Weinberg published a very basic book about a decade or so ago that was a quick and easy read called "One Renegade Cell". If you don't have time for that, I really recommend taking a look at his classical review on cancer biology (2000). For those that don't have access, I'm attaching it (hopefully). Let me know if it doesn't work or if it's a violation of TOS. Apparently there's also an updated version (2011). If anyone wants a copy let me know, and I'll attach it in another post. I tried to attach multiples, but I don't think it worked.

+1 Couldn't agree more about The Emperor of All Maladies, though I'm impossibly jealous of its author. Rhodes scholar, Harvard-educated and well-regarded cancer researcher/physician who decides to write a book to cope with the stress of his fellowship...which then wins the Pulitzer.
