Playboy... all about the articles.

But seriously, good scientific stuff in Nature <- online and free. Their medical subjournals are great.

For medical stuff, everybody here will probably preach "The New England Journal of Medicine." Which comes out weekly and isn't written by a 4-year old.

Otherwise, pick something your interested in and read away... "Sports Illustrated," "Newsweek," "Esquire," are three that I like.

Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, New York Magazine, The Economist, ...

I would stay away from too many scientific based mags. Just don't be one of those premeds that totally engulf themselves in science every second, of every hour of their lives. It will keep you well rounded, and more interesting.

The Economist is pretty popular. I like the New Yorker personally.

As Depakote said, Nature is really good as well. If you can understand it, the New England Journal of Medicine is probably the most reputable medical journal in the US.

Also, you can get your local newspaper or go for one of the more popular ones (NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal etc).

Best of luck,
-Dr. P.

TIME magazine has a good mix of science, politics and culture without being too heavily academic. If you want to immerse yourself in bio, you could do what my friend does and browse Pubmed for fun (coughnerdcough)

Agree with this -- you may burn out on the med stuff if you start it so early. Also you want to be able to talk inteligently to non-physicians too, so don't limit your reading material away from world events. But if you must, the science section of the NY Times often has good health related stuff, and is dumbed down to the point that anyone can understand it 🙂 .

Certainly..

Thanks for the suggestions folks.. 👍

I love reading the articles in PLAYBOY. And by "articles" I mean pictures, and by "reading" I mean staring. 😀

I'm a big fan of the New Yorker. Good current events along with ariticles on every conceivable and seemingly random topic available. The past few months I have seen articles on pigeon racing, blue collar comedy tour, a lobster fisher/ecologist, medicine, etc. etc. And it comes out every week and is very well written. Look around online and you can get a subscription for less than a buck an issue. 👍

I recommend Men's Health. It has a good mix of health, sex, style, compelling articles (this month's big article is "The Heros of Darfur" which is about doctors there), weightlifting, nutrition, and a lot more. I definitely recommend this magazine!

Time
muscle mustangs and fast fords
national geographic
maxim

good stuff, don't kill yourself with science 24/7...there will be PLENTY of time in medical school to do that, trust me.

Scientific America Mind is awesome if you like readable articles about neuropsyc, psychiatry, and other neuroscience stuff.

I gotta vote for Time Magazine. I think its great for Current Events.

If you like current events in particular, Newsweek would be good.

Time has articles on current events and "flavor of the month"-type articles...hence, the reason why it is such a popular magazine.

Newsweek is pretty cut and dry though.

If I could subscribe to only one, I would go for "The Week." It's pretty cool, it takes the entire week's world news from many different publications and condenses it. Check it out

I really wanted to subscribe to that, but isnt it like $10 an issue??

nm, its 6 issues = $20

Newspapers are always good. I enjoy Time, and ESPN the magazine.

National Geographic is fun. Although in a recent article they said that riptiles evolved from dinosaurs, and that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. 😛

Go with the New Yorker, it has humor, solid news, politics, movie reviews. Pretty much everything you need, and it is a higher quality of literature than that of Time or Newsweek.

Thanks folks 🙂

I like to read Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Discover, Scientific American, Psychology Today, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Entertainment Weekly, Time, U.S. News, New Physician, and magazines about architecture.

I'll read a Newsweek or Time periodically, but it's not very deep at all.

"Newsweek" is a quickie current events update more than anything, I think it equivalent to watching Fox News for 24 hours.... but I don't have that kinda free time, so I skim the news magazine.

I don't know why, but I feel like a tool keeping "The New Yorker" around. I feel like one of those pre-meds thats trying way to hard to be cultured and I'd rather just be entertained when I read.

Wow, you need a TV my friend 😛

Wired
The Economist (far superior to Time or Newsweek IMHO)
The New Yorker

👍

Wired is phenomenal.

Scientific American and The Atlantic Monthly are my sole subscriptions. As other's have suggested, though, The Economist is good stuff.

Yeah man... I have a TV.
There's not a whole lot worth watching on it... that's the problem.

Everything is a reality show now and all the people on reality shows don't act like they would in real life.

The good news is that the new season of AMAZING RACE is coming on soon, so I'll have a reason to get back to the tube again.

If that makes me an american idiot, then so be it.
I'm not going to read The Economist just so I can tell my interviewer that I read The Economist.

Seed Magazine is a pretty cool scimag

I second that. I just subscribed to this after reading the ones at Borders for the past few months. Its an interesting way of presenting science and culture without being too academic.

oh, go to bestdealmagazines.com for good prices. i think seed was 5 bucks. for 5 bucks, you can't beat the enjoyment/dollar ratio!

i think men's health is good if you're a dude. and national geographic is good too.

The Economist

You should first check out to which journals/magazines your university subscribes online. For example, I read Nature and NEJM online for free because my school has an institutional subscription.

The Economist regularly hands out free day passes to read all of its articles for free online as well.

You might also want to check if your school subscribes to Lexis/Nexis. If it does, you can get just about any article from any magazine free. Plus, Lexis/Nexis categorizes articles, so you can read just economics or medical articles, if you want.

I'd pick the economist, national geographic, and sports illustrated.

as far as current events, it's been said on here, but it's definitely true enough that it's worth repeating, the economist is way better than time, newsweek, or us news, all three of which really are pretty much the same. Every issue of the economist covers events from around the whole world, not just whatever the current obsession of the week for the other three is. I think even their coverage of US news and politics is actually better than the coverage in the big 3 US news mags (the economist is based in london)

Popular Science and Business Week are very good. GQ, stuff, and Men's health are good too.
