I work the graveyard shift and attend school during the day to fulfill my pre-req's for admission to pharm school. I have another year left, but I am starting to get burned out. I've worked in the IT field ( graveyard shift ) for years, but never had to attend classes. I find it hard to take a full load since I know I won't be able to do well. I've been taking 9 hours a semester but it seems like it's taking forever to finish. All my grades have been A's and one B. Any suggestions on how to cope with the physical and mental repercussions of this journey? I guess sleep would help but who has time for that? 😛

Funny Pharm,

I really admire what you are doing. I have two more semesters to go as well. I work the graveyard shift from 10 pm-8 am M-R at a giant pharmaceutical company, volunteer 10 hours a week, and am taking pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology at two community colleges. It has been a difficult ride so far, but I hope it pays off with entrance to some programs. I feel burned out at times since I have activities six days a week. Working this shift tends to isolate me as well. I would advise that you set aside one day a week for you, one with no activities preferably. Exercise when you can find the time is a way to get some of the stress off. I am lucky that I have a significant other who understands what I'm going through.

The great thing about the grave shift is I get to study over there when there isn't anything to do. Thank goodness my applications are nearly complete. I am just waiting for an interview now. Well, anyways good luck and take it easy. It will pay off when you get in somewhere

Peter, thanks for the words of encouragement. It's nice to know I'm not the only one suffering through the night shift. I too have a mate that is very understanding but I know it bothers her that this route is taking its toll on me. I especially feel horrible when we make plans to watch a movie and I fall alseep within the first 15 minutes. LoL...I feel like I've aged 20 years physically, as weird as that may sound. I seem to grunt when I sit or stand now. Well enough of my pity party. Goodluck to you Peter and all the 3rd shifters.
