I worked incredibly hard in kindergarten to get into a great elementary school. Then I worked incredibly hard to get into a great junior high. Then I worked incredibly hard to get into a great High school. Then I worked incredibly incredibly hard to get into a top 5 university.

That is where I stole books from others, DDOSed the class servers to prevent students from studying for tests. I raised my hand in every single class and asked inane and ignorant, yet numerous questions. I went to every study session and office hours. I sat in the front in every class. I volunteered as an orthopedic surgeon at my local ER on weekends. I worked in Antarctica doing cancer research while simultaneously curing the native populations of AIDS. I took all of my pre-med pre-requisites at community colleges the semester prior to taking it officially at the university, just to hurt the curve for others. I travelled to Nigeria to perform biomedical research in stem cells and published several world-renowned papers in Nature, JAMA, and Science.

I did an orthopedic residency in Harvard Medical School. I got up at 3:00AM to prepare coffee and patients for the residents and attendings. I stole my fellow residents' patients and presented them to the attendings. I stole cases from behind their backs and did the work for them. I kiss the attendings' asses every day of the week. 80 hour max weeks mean nothing to me. I shall not sleep, I shall not tire, I shall not play fair.

I am now a practicing orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo clinic, getting paid $600,000 a year. I've been divorced 5 times. Everyone around me hates my guts. I am alone, wallowing around in my thousands of dollars. I fill my loneliness by donating money to the DNC. I am miserable. Yet I prevail in my work. I am 75 years old.

I am a gunner. Hear me roar! RRROOOOOOAAAAAA *cough * cough * AAAAARRRRRRRR.

Arguably, one of the dumbest posts made on SDN. (Yes, I know the post was trying to satirize the gunner mentality.)

I actually liked it. It was very witty, and it did bring up some noteworthy points.

I for one would love to see the correlation between being a "gunner" and real, interpersonal skills. It would testify to a lot of predisposed beliefs, as well as give some regard as to whether or not there should be some type of limit on the degree of competitiveness that one exudes.

We have racism, ageism, sexism, and I believe we need a new word for all those who discriminate against gunners. How about gunism or gunnerism (or would that be the malady that causes the gunner syndrome?) ? We can have the constitution changed!

Dr. Dean you stole my "#1 Gunner" tag!

....

GOOD JOB! Thats how you gun properly.

btw.. i'm a wannabe gunner... I'll be competitive, but I don't think I have the heart to bring others down at the end of the day 👍

On the other hand, Dr. Dean is a maniac.. someone should quarantine him before he screams his head off and explodes.

Hmmm. I might have struck a nerve with that one. I notice you are going to Berkeley. Did I truly accurately describe the gunner within?

There is quite a strong correlation between horrible interpersonal skills and gunnerism. Horrible not in the quality of conversation, but horrible in the sense that the gunner cares so little for others that he can lie straight to the face of classmates. The gunner considers all other classmates as enemies and can not possibly make friends with them unless for his own gain (as in study partners). Gunnerism can actually be classified as a psychological disorder. It is quite similar to being anti-social.

I do believe that there is a limit. If someone does not exhibit the true hatred for other classmates and does not exhibit anti-social behavior, then I think that the person is not a true gunner. To be a gunner, you truly need to feel the desire to "gun down" your classmates. It has nothing to do with "shooting" your arm up in class (I'm referring to raising a hand, not heroin). It all has to do with the anti-social desire to hurt others.
