Okay I do not have competitive GPA by any means. I currently have a 2.47 and I am in the process of retaking a couple of classes that I did not do well in a few years back. I intend to the DAT very soon. I am also a combat veteran. I missed one year of school because of my deployment to Iraq. I returned and had problems with readjusting and dealt with some PTSD that my grades suffered even more. I would like to know if any admissions committee would consider the other factors other than my GPA. In addition, I recently applied to a postbac program to strengthen my GPA. Please provide some insight on any path I have on being accepted to dental school!

All you have to do is basically tell the schools what you just said on here. You can do all of that on you personal statement when you apply. Dental schools are not just about the numbers, but they also care about the conditions (in your case deployment/PTSD) under which you received those grades and are interested in your life besides the numbers. They take into consideration what other things you had/have going on in your life and the challenges you've faced. But, you should definately raise you GPA to at least 3.0 since most schools do have GPA cut offs. If you don't make the cut off, schools automatically put you aside or reject you so that you won't even get to explain yourself and your personal statement won't even make it to review. And a postbac program is definately on the right track. Do well in the postback program, do extremely well on DAT, have lots of extracurricular activities, and dental experience. GOOD LUCK!

Heres my advice:

You have one more shot to make everything alright. Take either a post-bac or masters and get a straight 4.0. Make sure you do everything in your power to raise that GPA to a 3.0 and ace the DAT.

But before you embark on that journey, make sure that you're fine now. I understand PTSD can be extremely difficult on a person, and that it could reemerge and affect your postbac/masters grades...so make sure you're ready... you only have one more shot...

I know its cheesy to say it over the internet: but thanks for the service. I hope you do well on your upcoming classes. I'm rooting for you.👍
