I'm a graduate of St. George's University (2005), but an American citizen. I have passed Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS. The problem is that I had multiple attempts at both Step 1 and Step 2 CK. I have applied through ERAS multiple times with no success. Is there any hope of finding a program (of any kind, any where) that DESPERATELY needs a resident? Thinking not, I'm pursuing other fields than medicine, but if anyone knows a way for me to do something with my degree, I'm all ears! Thanks.

I think you already know the answer to this...but just to clarify...

No

You're 9 years out, have at least 2 big (and one small) other red flags and you've tried and failed multiple times. Sorry, but it's not happening. Good for you for realizing this and pursuing other options.

What were you doing for the past 8 years since you graduated from med school? Do you have anything productive (medicine-wise) to show for that huge gap?

How many attempts at Step 1 and 2 CK? What were your scores?

What was your strategy in the past when applying for the Match? What fields were you applying to?

Were you applying for the Match every single year since 2005?

I am not gonna say its impossible...but the odds are against you.

Know your statistics...what did you do all these years

If your dedicated to medicine why did you not do some research, why did you not spend time at an academic center. I know finances are issue, but I am just trying to point out some tips that could have and possible can help you.

I know a guy with multiple fails on all exams, the guy worked really really hard and spent time impressing the right people, and they got him into a nice psych program in Manhattan.

I saw a person that worked in a community hospital with case management, and was 10 years out of residency, well this persons hard work and effort got the attention of the program, and with the help of some influential big shots, the program took this person

By doing this you expand your network and make contacts, you then prove to people that regardless of the mistakes, your dedicated. And these people will now see you as more than just a number on paper. This is the problem alot of people have...how are you content with being just a number on paper...why are they not trying to get out there and shine

Best of luck

Why are you thinking of this rather than working hard at your current career to work your way up?

Things that will be held against you: 8 years of non-clinical time, multiple fails and attempts at step exams, and Caribbean medical school. Would you be able to get LORs from anyone you worked with? I think research is not going to help, given that you would be shooting for poor community programs that don't care for it.

As the most recent poster said, perhaps the only chance would be something outside of the match where you really get to know people at a particular program and impress them through an observership. But that would require time and resources and still would be unlikely to succeed.

I'm sorry you're in this position, but I just don't see it happening. Even if you had the most impeccable 8 years post-med school (published multiple papers in clinical/basic science journals, worked with a major healthcare organization - IRC/WHO/CDC, etc.) I just don't see a residency program getting over the negatives of your medical school and board exams.

Try Saint Barnabas in the Bronx NY, strong IMG hospital that no one wants to work at because of the location. It's worth a shot.
