Hi all,

I just recieved my step 1 score. I have 92/218. Realistically speaking, what are my chances to score internal medicine Residency. my GPA is 3.58.

Your input is appreciated.

Thanks.

a good third year performance/Step 2 score plus knowing the right people should get you what you want

I would agree, passing the test qualifies you to continue training and pursue residency. Your score is close to the average score, so you're definitely not dead in the water. A great letter and the right connections will set you up. A BAD letter (which are more common than some think) or poor clinical grades will kill you. I would plan on applying to alot of schools, but demonstrating your passionate about IM is vital. Spend sometime reading about it/ research etc. drop by the local IM dept when you have down time on a rotation etc. (and make sure they know this). That's what I would do!

thx for input

you are in good shape. Did you make yourself the most desirable candidate in the nation? of course not.. but you also didnt put yourself in the unenviable position of being unable to match your desired specialty. Remember, the figures given are averages. which means there are a ton of people below that number who match (and plenty with scores worse than yours)

The key is, being flexible on where you apply. Know what residency programs more strongly consider your score range( i.e. dont limit yourself to applying only to SoCal programs), apply broadly, make yourself visible but not annoying on the floors, arrive first, leave last when you're on rotations, be polite, smile, be a welcoming presence. There is so much time left for you to make an impression, and I am certain your board score isn't going to the bottom line when match day comes for you. Good luck!
