Hey guys,

I am a first time applicant to American dental schools so apologies in advance for my ignorance on certain topics.

I finished my application in early June and my stats are fairly strong (3.9/4.00, 24 PAT, 22 RC, 22 Sciences. Im Canadian so there is no QR or OC in the DAT I wrote). From my understanding I was told that the earlier you apply, the earlier you will hear back from schools. However, I have not yet received any interview invites despite being in or near the "first batch" of applications. On top of that I am reading threads where some applicants who applied later than I did are already receiving interviews.

Is anyone else in the same boat, or does anyone know if this is normal (maybe they interview local applicants first)?

Thanks a lot

When did you submit your application? I know a lot of schools do not send invites in order. Someone got invite from UCONN few days after he submitted.

AADSAS says my completed application was maiked out on June 24th. And yeah I've read that all schools have different interview periods so it varies

Where did you apply and how are your ECs, shadowing?

1. Maryland
2. Boston
3. Penn
4. Temple
5. Marquette
6. Case Western
7. Pittsburgh
8. Touro
9. NYU
10. Buffalo

ECs and shadowing I think are decently strong:
- 60 + hours of shadowin (4 general dentists and 1 specialist)
- 130+ hours of volunteering (both local and international)
- Spent one summer doing research

However, I did do the majority of the shadowing this year during the application cycle ( I was originally going to apply next application cycle but was told to give it a shot for this cycle), so maybe that is a factor?

I'm a Canadian and I have similar stats (3.97 overall, 3.83 science, 20 AA) and I have not received any yet. I applied to 8 schools; 3 are probably a reach though.

We're in this together then haha. You're not alone and I know that feeling of waiting forever that you're likely also experiencing

I applied 18 schools, and now I got four interviews. But I only get Maryland from your list, and I applied to most same schools as yours. So probably it's still not the time yet!

When did you submit your application and how long did you wait until you heard from them concerning an interview?

I have a similar GPA as yours (OGPA 3.99, 4.00 SGPA) but a lower DAT (20 AA). I haven't heard from those schools either but a friend of mine who applied last cycle told me lots of interviews come post-Dec. for Canadian applicants based on his experience. I don't know how accurate that is for this year but I'm really hoping they haven't decreased the amount of Canadian student interviews and/or acceptances this cycle

My aadsas application mailed out on 8.12, and most of my supplements were submitted at the end of August or on September. I was surprised that most of my interviews are from the schools I submitted on Sept. It makes me wondered if my earlier application have been skipped yet, as most schools I applied on August are pretty tough.
But certainly don't lose hopes on earlier ones, it's still October! I read last year's thread and there are many people got accepted weeks before orientation.

Thanks for the information, I never knew that. Guess we'll just have to keep playing the waiting game

lol same boat, thought I was the only one. Im Canadian, 3.97 gpa, 22AA, 23 PAT, mailed early June. Seeming more likely we'll be post Dec1st interviews

Well now we all know we're not the only ones, so don't worry!

Any reason you're applying to the US with a 3.97?

Lots of Canadians that I know are applying to the US since the competition in Canada is ridiculous. Everyone has a 3.9+ GPA (even lots of 4.0) and high DAT scores (22AA+) but there are limited dental schools. Your best shot is your in province school, which has variable class sizes depending on which part of the country you live in. Having a GPA of 3.97 definitely puts you up there as a great applicant but its literally make or break with the interview. I applied to multiple Canadian schools last cycle and interviewed but didn't get any acceptances (GPA is 3.99, 3.95 on OMSAS, 94%) so the margin of error is quite small. If you really want to be a dentist, US schools give you a great opportunity and there are lots of schools, especially with their clinical program being better than Canadian dental schools.

Well I'm Canadian so I understand the competitiveness, but didn't realize that 3.9 has become the new average now. I assumed 3.85+ and you're good. Canada really needs to fix this problem, IMO. They're pushing potential Canadian dentists out based on GPA alone. They need to increase class sizes, or potentially build more schools.

You guys all need to take a deep breath and stay patient. All of your stats are amazing and I'm certain you will all have many interviews and hopefully an acceptance. I have much lower stats, 3.7 bcp, 3.61 sgpa, 3.57ogpa, 22 dat and have 3 interviews out of 19 schools I applied to and am grateful. However, I have an awesome upward trend with a GPA of 4.24 in my last 3 years. Just stay patient guys, it has to happen this year, so this stressful period will be over soon.

Hey guys. I'm Canadian, currently in my second year at Temple University in Philadelphia for dental school. Hold tight. I had one pre-December interview and five post-December interviews. Most American dental schools are hesitant to take Canadians because due to the Canadian schools interviewing/accepting so much later in the cycle, many Canucks tend to flake out after being accepted to an American school and go to the Canadian school. This leaves the American school scrambling to find a student to fill the seat (this came directly from the admissions officer here at Temple). I'm confident all of you will get interviews given your stats, just gotta wait it out!

Another point. The reason why no more dental schools are opening (or class sizes expanding) in Canada is to control saturation. The more seats available for students, the more dentists will saturate our market. This is not good for business or paying off student loans. So think of it as a blessing. Down here in the States saturation is a huge issue due to so many schools popping up and class sizes continuously increasing. So with the schools that are currently active in Canada along with many students coming down here to become dentists (that plan on going back to Canada), there will be more than enough dentists to saturate our market. Just some food for thought.

Before you ask, I interviewed at the following:

American Schools:
Western University of Health Sciences
Roseman University of Health Sciences (declined)
Temple University
Indiana University
Case Western Reserve University

Canadian School:
Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University

Thank you so much for this information. It really added perspective. Now I guess me and the others will just hang on the best we can.

Pretty much what Dan Rios said. I just want to get in this year somewhere.

Thanks for this, gives some more hope! Btw, I don't really agree on your saturation point for Canada (because of population growth/interest in the profession/large or many areas with few dentists etc), but I guess we're entitled to our opinions.
