Looking for some insight from those who sent their primaries in October (because of mcat retake or whatever) and still managed to get an acceptance somewhere. Could you guys shed some light on how this impacted your application? How many acceptances/interviews/waitlists/total applications sent? Your CGPA/SGPA/MCAT?

Thanks. 🙂

I sent out 2 secondaries in October (one was mid October, one was end of October) and got interviews at both of those schools in early January and February. Waitlisted at both, accepted to one.

3.8 sGPA/cGPA
36 MCAT

I did it but it was my only option as I didn't want to wait another year. Foreign student, 12 schools, 5 interviews, 1 acceptance, 3 waitlists. It hurt me regardless, but I'm an MS1 so it's all good.

3.9 GPA, 33 MCAT (9 VR, 12's on others)

My advice: try to avoid applying late if possible, unless that is your only option.

Thanks for the response. I didn't actually intend on applying late, but I think I might have to if I atleast wanna make it this cycle.

Any others?

hmm good job! You definitely had good stats which helped, but as you said, it is definitely a huge risk

I submitted my secondaries in November and December last year (a lot of stupidity mixed with a lot of crazyness). Applied to 10 schools:
-I was granted an II from Pitt, later wait-listed until death (From January till matriculation day, August 6th).
-I was put on hold for UCF, meaning if someone canceled their interview I may get one. Never did. So rejected there.
-All others were outright rejections, eventually. I never did hear back from FSU.

My Stats:
3.73-ish GPA
35Q (14PS 10VR 11PS)

Suggestion, just wait the year and do something fun and planned (even if it is a year of working). Waiting around on a waitlist killed most of my options, and while I ended with a decent situation, I pretty much live day-to-day not knowing what's coming next. Also re-applying SUCKS!

You can check out my mdapps for details, but most of my secondaries were completed in October. My late app was due to my committee interview being in September.

3.8/3.9/36
complete at 22 schools / interviewed at 7 / waitlisted at 4 / 1 acceptance off waitlist / 2 acceptances outright / 1 rejection post-interview

I'm not sure how much a late app affects one's chances, and of course it's gonna vary significantly from person to person, but I was very happy with how things turned out for me.

edit: if you have questions, feel free to pm me

It sounds like a lot of students that finished secondaries in October are reporting acceptances, but this is not the same as applying in October.

Correct. Complete does not equal applying. I met someone who just submitted their primary to be verified. Now they have to wait for that, fill out the secondary and then wait for the interviews. You will be at the bottom of the pile. Hopefully you have some great ECs, GPA and MCAT score to help you out.

Sent from my iPod using SDN Mobile app. Please excuse the typos.

My girlfriend is a fourth year MD/PhD student right now, and she submitted her (primary) application at ~11:50pm on Oct 15 (or maybe 14? I think 15). She figured all you needed to do was get in before the deadline...

Hell if I know how she got in, but she did.

im guessing that more and more schools are not letting the "time factor" becoming an issue.

Damn just sent their primary? I was verified/sent out primaries last week, and I was worried I was late haha.

Any others guys?

So I started applying in June, was verified in July, and finished 90% of my secondaries in August-September. I completed another secondary this month that I hadn't gotten around to earlier, and I have 2 more schools to submit secondaries for.

While I'm sure applying early definitely gives you an advantage, it's looking more and more to me like it isn't an end all to everything if you apply late. I've sat by and watched so many people get interview invites that had submitted their secondaries after me. So far, I only have 1 rejection, 2 holds, and 1 interview invite, despite being complete mid August.

My mindset is honestly to get in wherever I can, if I have the option of deciding between schools I'll consider it a bonus 😀 That being said, I might just apply to another school or two next week. Can't hurt right?

I'm all with you on just getting in anywhere I can. However, it seems like your still not technically too "late" an applicant, considering you actually sent your primaries June-July.

I actually sent my primaries October 17, and one more just now lol; so hopefully your end all theory holds true! 🙂

You may or may not get in, but you have undoubtedly hurt your chances significantly. My school isnt accepting anymore primaries as of oct 15. Many non rolling schools are dolling out acceptances as we speak. By the time you finish your secondaries in november, most interview spots at a lot of schools may be filled. It way work out for you, but the idea that applying this late isnt still a major negative is false hope.

Yea, I know it's a major negative. But I just thought applying couldn't have hurt, even if it's 22 schools lol.

 It just depends on your POV I suppose. Some would say it isn't worth applying now, because it hurts your chances if you have to reapply, but you have to do what is best for your plans.

I was under the impression that reapplying doesn't hurt one's chances? Can you please elaborate?

I hope this thread becomes as infamous as 27-29 MCAT and the low GPA threads!

I personally love the "I applied on june 8th. I think my experience belongs in this thread because I can't read a calendar."

It does. For one, they are going to expect you to explain how you have since improved your previous application. You will also have to redo a lot of essays, personal statements, etc. For two, you are going to have to deal with the stigma that no school wanted you enough. This makes a lot of schools a tad more hesitant to take a "chance" on you. Some schools might not even look at reapplicants to their school, but its been a while since I've looked into that so I couldn't really say on that point.

All valid points I guess. But the key word in your argument here is "might." Simple response- might as well; YOLO, ill see you in residency son. 😛

No, only the third point is a might, the first two are cause enough to do everything that you can not to have to reapply.

Just wait till the next cycle, OP. Stop fishing for comforting anecdotes. Don't take applying lightly...it costs a lot of time, energy, and money. And like others are saying, being a reapplicant is not fun and you're not on the same playing field as the fresh applicants.
