I'm probably going to go DO,but I've got the choice between 2 MD and 1 DO.

I've talked to a few people, mostly uniformed friends and a guy at at diner this morning, and the opinions are all over the place.

I guess it comes down to where I see myself and what I want to do for a specialty. I'm thinking family medicine, mostly.

I recognize that going DO will mean some challenges that aren't necessarily inherent in being an MD, but is it all worth it? I believe it is. I believe it's about the patients. I wish I could see into the future.

yes and currently NSUCOM is my top choice.

I have yet to hear form some other school but I am basing my decision on many levels such as location, curriculum, rotations, comfort level and cost. Get the facts and follow your heart.

Spiritual Duck,
That would be me as well. I know there are few of us out there that may choose DO over MD, but I think if it's for good reasons, then it is the right thing to do. Currently, I've gotten into 2 MD and 2 DO.

I'm waiting on Loma Linda post interview though. If I get in there I'll go, but if not I'm off to COMP. I'm interested in family medicine also so don't see it affecting me much. Mostly everyone I know says I should take the MD but I'm not listening. I'd rather go with my gut feeling and do what I think is right.

Hey,

Thanks slickness. I'm waiting on one more MD program, but I'm really thinking that I'll go DO. I've got to be honest, most people have been very pro-MD to me, including my family doc who is a DO.

However, I just feel like I'll be more at home during medical school, a better setting, more relaxed, and I think OMT will be advantageous. I've done a fair amount of shadowing. I think I'm beginning to understand the differences.

But am I being shortsighted? In ten years, will it matter at all where I spent four years?

When I was applying two years ago, I thought about applying to DO schools as well, but I didn't for several reasons.

1) I wanted the possibility to practice back in Canada. Although DOs are starting to be granted practice rights in Canada, it is still next to impossible to secure a residency up there as a grad of a non-LCME school.

2) While OMT may sound great, reading the boards at SDN made me realize this was going to be a pain more than anything to learn. Med school is hard enough, I did not want an extra class that made life even more miserable.

3) Philosophy: I really questioned the difference between the MD and DO philosophy and came to the conclusion that there really was none.

4) Patient population: Most DO schools have hospitals that are community based, and I feared that hence, there might not be as many interesting cases had I gone to a more academic center.

and finally,

5) Research: I like research and wanted to go to a place where research was big. I also believe that the strength of an institution is based largely on research.

These are my reasons for not picking DO. Some of these reasons may not be as important to you but they were a big factor in choosing which schools to apply to. If you want to be an FP, DO schools are fine, but keep in mind that your mind may change in a couple years. I'm not saying it's impossible to land a competitive residency as a DO but it might be a little more difficult. Just something to think about.

Thanks Moo,

All good points, points that I've considered. I might change my mind, I might rotate through and find what I really want. I guess I have a few things to think about. Don't get me wrong, I feel blessed to have the opportunity to even decide. I feared that I wouldn't even get in.
